👥 13.2M metro population🚀 15,000+ startups🦄 55 unicorns

Bangalore is a tech capital that never bulldozed its past: a 9th-century cave temple under a hill, a palace modelled on Windsor Castle, a 1927 market hall and two great gardens sit inside a city of 13 million. Give it two full days for the centre and a third for a dawn trip to Nandi Hills. The plateau climate is mild all year, and November to February is the driest, easiest stretch.

What Bangalore is like for a traveller

People come for work and stay for the coffee, the weather and the green. The city sits on a plateau at about 900 metres, so even April rarely tops 34°C, and the mornings smell of filter coffee and jasmine from the flower stalls. It is not a city of one great monument. Its pleasure is in layers: Kempegowda's watchtowers on billion-year-old rock, Tipu Sultan's teak palace a few streets from the market, colonial bungalows in the old Cantonment, and craft breweries and bookshops on Church Street after dark.

The honest catch is traffic. It plans your day for you, so group sights by area and use the metro where it reaches. Kannada is the city language; English is enough in tourist places.

Top places to visit in Bangalore

  • [Lalbagh Botanical Garden](/en/bengaluru/lalbagh-botanical-garden/): 240 acres laid out by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, a glasshouse of 1889 and the 3-billion-year-old Lalbagh Rock with a Kempegowda watchtower on top. Flower shows run around 26 January and 15 August.
  • [Cubbon Park](/en/bengaluru/cubbon-park/): the green heart of the centre, with Vidhana Soudha (the state legislature, 1956) and the red Attara Kacheri facing each other across it. Both are seen from outside only.
  • [Bangalore Palace](/en/bengaluru/bangalore-palace/): a Tudor Revival palace finished in 1878 and still owned by the Wadiyar family; an hour inside is enough. The audio guide is paid separately (₹230 per Karnataka Tourism).
  • [ISKCON Bangalore](/en/bengaluru/iskcon-bangalore/): the Hare Krishna temple on a hill, with kirtan (devotional chanting) and free prasad (blessed food).
  • Gavi Gangadhareshwara Cave Temple: a Shiva shrine cut into rock around the 9th century. On Makar Sankranti, 14 January, the setting sun passes between Nandi's horns onto the lingam inside.
  • Bull Temple and [Dodda Ganapathi Temple](/en/bengaluru/dodda-ganapathi-temple/): a monolithic Nandi about 5 metres high and, a minute away, a Ganesha carved from a single rock, sometimes coated in butter.
  • [Halasuru Someshwara Temple](/en/bengaluru/halasuru-someshwara-temple/): the oldest temple in the core, with Vijayanagara carving at its best.
  • Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace and the old fort: two storeys of teak arches finished in 1791, and the granite Delhi Gate in the middle of the KR Market traffic.
  • Museums: the [Government Museum](/en/bengaluru/government-museum/) holds the Halmidi inscription of about 450 CE, the earliest written Kannada; the [NGMA](/en/bengaluru/national-gallery-of-modern-art/) runs from Raja Ravi Varma to Amrita Sher-Gil; [Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath](/en/bengaluru/karnataka-chitrakala-parishath/) has two permanent halls with 117 works by Nicholas and Svetoslav Roerich.
  • Markets: [Russell Market](/en/bengaluru/russell-market/) in its 1927 hall, the dawn flower street of [Gandhi Bazaar](/en/bengaluru/gandhi-bazaar/), and [Commercial Street](/en/bengaluru/commercial-street-bazaar/) with about 2,000 shops.
  • Lakes at sunset: [Sankey Tank](/en/bengaluru/sankey-tank/) has a 1.75 km loop; [Kaikondrahalli Lake](/en/bengaluru/kaikondrahalli-lake/) is a dead lake the neighbourhood brought back to life.

Beyond the city: half-day and day trips

  • [Nandi Hills](/en/bengaluru/nandi-hills/): a hill fortress at 1,478 metres about 60 km north. Gates open at 6:00; the reason to go is watching the valley fill with cloud at sunrise.
  • [Bannerghatta Biological Park](/en/bengaluru/bannerghatta-biological-park/): zoo, rescue centre and bus safari through open forest about 22 km south, plus India's first butterfly park.
  • [Savandurga](/en/bengaluru/savandurga/): a bare granite dome about 60 km west. The climb is 5.5 km round trip with almost no shade, and a Forest Department permit is required.
  • [Dodda Alada Mara](/en/bengaluru/dodda-alada-mara/): a single banyan four centuries old, spread over about three acres.
  • [Devanahalli Fort](/en/bengaluru/devanahalli-fort/): an oval fort of 1501 with a village still living inside, minutes from the airport, so it fits a first or last day.

How many days to spend in Bangalore

One day: Lalbagh in the morning, Bull Temple and Dodda Ganapathi nearby, Tipu's palace and the fort by KR Market, then Cubbon Park and Vidhana Soudha in the evening light.

Two days: add the museums by Cubbon Park, Bangalore Palace, a dawn walk through Gandhi Bazaar or Malleswaram's 8th Cross market, and sunset at Sankey Tank.

Three days or more: keep one dawn for Nandi Hills, and a day for Bannerghatta or the climb at Savandurga. Plan each day around one part of the city; crossing it twice costs hours.

Best time to visit Bangalore

Bangalore works all year, which is rare for India. November to February is the best window: days around 27–31°C, nights down to 16°C and little rain. March to May is the warm stretch, peaking at about 34°C in April. The monsoon months stay mild but wet, and September and October bring the heaviest showers (around 186–208 mm a month) with local flooding on the roads. Month-by-month figures are on the [weather page](/en/bengaluru/weather/).

How to get to Bangalore and around it

By air: Kempegowda International (BLR) is the main gateway to South India, with direct flights from Europe and the Gulf. It sits 40 km north of the centre, and that is normal here: Vayu Vajra airport buses run around the clock (about ₹150–380, 1–2 hours), and prepaid taxis or Uber and Ola cost about ₹800–1,600. Leave 2.5–3 hours for the drive back to the airport.

By train: there are three stations, KSR Bengaluru City by Majestic, Yeshvantpur in the north and SMVT in the east, so check the one on your ticket. Mysuru is about 2 hours away, Chennai about 4.5 hours by Vande Bharat.

By bus: overnight sleeper buses come in from Hyderabad, Chennai, Goa and Hampi.

Around the city: Namma Metro is the one way to ignore the traffic, with fares of about ₹10–90 and QR tickets in the metro app or on WhatsApp. Autos rarely use the meter, so book them in an app; Namma Yatri takes no commission from drivers and is usually the cheapest. Cabs make sense with luggage or late at night. Details are on the pages about [getting here](/en/bengaluru/how-to-get-there/) and [getting around](/en/bengaluru/getting-around/).

✅ Practical tips

  • Start early — Flower markets trade before dawn, Nandi Hills opens at 6:00, and Lalbagh's visitor hours are 9:00–18:00 (walkers from 5:00 to 9:00). The city rewards mornings.
  • Ride the metro across the centre — In rush hour it beats a taxi on the same route, and the airport bus is no downgrade either: it has luggage bays and runs all night.
  • Dress for temples — Dress modestly and leave shoes at the entrance. The [temple dress code page](/en/bengaluru/temple-dress-code/) has the details.
  • Bargain at stalls, not in showrooms — On Commercial Street fixed-price shops sit next to stalls where haggling is expected. For guaranteed sandalwood and crafts, the state-run Cauvery emporium on MG Road has fixed prices.
