Sixteen acres of park wrapped around an outcrop of peninsular gneiss roughly three thousand million years old, among the oldest rock exposed anywhere on the surface of the Earth. Kempegowda II put one of his four boundary watchtowers on it, and a sentry's bugle from this rock once carried across the young city. At dusk the fruit-bat colonies overhead start moving and the whole park looks up. The Bull Temple and Dodda Ganapathi are two minutes away, which closes the Basavanagudi circuit. Free.

Three-billion-year-old rock, standing where the city's original boundary tower once was

Why it is called Bugle Rock

Kempegowda II, the chieftain who ruled Bengaluru from 1585, built four watchtowers to mark the edges of his city, and one of them stands on this rock. At sunset a sentry here blew a bugle and raised a torch, a signal seen from the three other towers that all was well. The name stuck long after the city grew far past the old boundary.

The rock itself is far older than any city: peninsular gneiss, between about 2.5 and 3.4 billion years old, among the oldest rock exposed anywhere on the surface of the Earth. Put a hand on it and you touch the deep foundation of the Deccan.

What to see

  • The rock and the watchtower. The bare gneiss and Kempegowda's small tower on top are the reason to come.
  • The bats at dusk. Indian flying foxes roost in the park's big trees, a roost of several hundred. At dusk they start moving overhead and the whole park looks up.
  • The park itself. Sixteen acres of walking paths, with an open-air amphitheatre.
  • The Basavanagudi circuit. The Bull Temple (Dodda Basavana Gudi), with its huge Nandi, and the Dodda Ganapathi temple are two minutes away, which makes this one short walk.

When to come

Come in the late afternoon. The light softens on the rock, and if you stay to dusk the flying foxes take off overhead. Entry is free. No official timetable is published online, so check opening hours locally.
