What to see
NGMA Bengaluru opened on 18 February 2009 in the Manikyavelu Mansion, a heritage residence on 3.5 acres turned into a gallery with 1,551 m² of display space, plus a new block of 1,260 m² built to match the old house. It is one of three National Galleries of Modern Art, with Delhi and Mumbai, run by the Ministry of Culture.
The collection traces Indian art from the early 18th century to the present: Indian miniatures, colonial-era artists, the Bengal School and post-independence painters. The India GO guide counts around 500 works, among them Raja Ravi Varma, Amrita Sher-Gil and the Tagores. Paintings and sculptures stay on permanent display, with national and international exhibitions alongside.
The grounds have old trees, fountains and a mirror pool. There is an auditorium, a public art reference library, a cafeteria and a museum shop.
How to reach NGMA Bengaluru
The address is 49 Palace Road, Vasanth Nagar, Bengaluru 560052. The gallery's own route starts at MG Road metro station (Purple Line): head to Anil Kumble Circle, turn right onto Queen's Road past Chinnaswamy Stadium, continue past the General Post Office along Raj Bhavan Road to the signal facing Hotel Chalukya, turn right past Sophia High School, cross the roundabout and carry on along Palace Road. NGMA is on the left, between an Anjaneya temple and a petrol pump.
By auto, book through an app (Namma Yatri, Rapido, Uber, Ola) so the fare is set before you get in. Bengaluru traffic is heavy at rush hour, which makes the metro the more predictable part of the trip.
When to go
The gallery is indoors, so the weather matters little; Bengaluru is mild all year and driest from November to February. Weekends give the longest hours, until 20:00, and a Wednesday or Saturday afternoon lets you join the 16:00 gallery walk.
