AreaBannerghatta Road (22 km south)

Zoo, rescue centre and drive-through safari on the forested southern edge of the city, about 22 km out. The Grand Safari sends caged buses through open country where lions, tigers and sloth bears range freely; the visitors are the ones behind bars here. India's first butterfly park adds a walk-through conservatory that lands well after the noise of the safari. Open 9:30 AM to 5 PM, closed Tuesdays. Zoo, safari and butterfly park are ticketed separately, with the same rates for Indian and foreign visitors; book safaris early at weekends.

Biological park or national park?

The names confuse almost everyone. Bannerghatta National Park is the protected forest on the southern edge of Bengaluru. Bannerghatta Biological Park is the visitor part formed from its zoo, safaris and rescue centres in 2002: about 732 hectares with a zoo, safaris, a butterfly park and a rescue centre for animals. Tickets, timings and everything on this page refer to the biological park.

The zoo began as a picnic corner in 1971, the lion safari followed in 1979 and the tiger safari in 1987. The idea of the safari is the reverse of a zoo: lions, tigers and sloth bears range across open, forested enclosures, and the visitors are the ones behind bars, in caged buses.

Timings and ticket prices

Open every day except Tuesday. Prices are the official tariff in force since 1 August 2025, in rupees, for adults / children / senior citizens. Where two figures are given, the first is for Monday to Friday and the second for Saturday, Sunday and government holidays. The tariff lists no separate rate for foreign visitors.

What to see

  • The safari. The reason most people come. The bus crosses open, forested enclosures where lions, tigers and bears move freely.
  • The zoo. A walking circuit through enclosures. The park itself warns that you may walk 2–3 km, so wear comfortable shoes.
  • The butterfly park. India's first butterfly enclosure, opened in 2006: 7.5 acres with a walk-through conservatory of about 10,000 sq ft.
  • The rescue centre. Part of the park's work since 2000. The park describes its rescue centres as off-display units giving lifetime care to rescued animals such as tigers, lions and bears from circuses, so they are not part of the visitor route.

With children

The park is a long day out with children. Take the zoo + safari combo rather than the zoo alone, do the safari first while the children are fresh, and keep the butterfly park for the end. The park itself advises comfortable shoes, water, hats and clothing that blends with nature rather than bright colours; it is a silent zone, and single-use plastic is not allowed inside. And remember Tuesday: the gates are shut.
