Mysore Saree Udyog, Bengaluru
Mysore Saree Udyog is a saree and fabric house on K. Kamaraj Road, near Commercial Street in central Bengaluru. The business began in 1932 supplying gold zari thread and has sold sarees and fabric since 1982: Mysore silk alongside Kanchipuram, Banarasi, Pochampalli and Odisha weaves, much of it certified by the Silk Mark Organisation of India.
Three storeys of silk near Commercial Street, grown out of a gold-zari business started in 1932; the shop itself opened in 1982. Pure-zari Mysore silks share the floors with Kanchipuram, Banarasi, Pochampalli and Odisha weaves, most of them carrying Silk Mark certification. Cloth is unfolded for as long as it takes, and the difference between two whites only becomes obvious on the third. German Vanity Fair once listed the place among the world's top shopping destinations; brides plan whole trips around it.

What is inside
Three storeys of cloth. The ground floor is sarees; the first floor is fabric by the metre, with brocades, silks, embellished nets and handwoven textiles such as Chanderi and Patola, which is where people come to have a blouse made or find a dupatta (long scarf) for a kurta. There is a bridal section where a trousseau can be chosen at leisure, plus salwar suits, lehengas and home linen.
The pleasure of the place is the unhurried way cloth is shown. Sarees are unfolded one after another for as long as it takes, and staff will drape one on you so you can see how it falls. The difference between two whites often becomes obvious only on the third.
The business began in zari, the gold thread used for borders, and its founder Pukhraj S. Talera later moved into yarn and fabric. Purchases can also be made through the store's website with home delivery.
✅ Buying real silk: how to check
The shop sells both pure silk and replica or art-silk versions of famous weaves, so ask what you are looking at before you fall for it.
- Look for the Silk Mark — The Silk Mark tag certifies natural silk. Ask to see it on the saree you are choosing.
- Pure means warp and weft — A 100% silk saree has silk yarn in both directions of the weave, not only on the surface.
- The burning test — KSIC, Karnataka's state silk corporation, describes a simple test: burn a thread from each direction. Pure silk smells of burnt hair and leaves a black residue that crumbles to powder between the fingers. Ask the shop for a loose thread rather than pulling one yourself.
- Zari — Ask whether the zari on the border is pure or imitation: it changes the price a great deal.
