How to choose: five kinds of meal

Prices run from ₹ at tiffin rooms and street stalls to ₹₹₹ in the hotel dining rooms; much of the best food sits at the cheap end.

Breakfast at a tiffin room (₹)

Tiffin is the light South Indian meal of idli, vada and dosa, and the darshini (quick-service counter) is where Bangalore eats it. The classics: Central Tiffin Room (CTR) in Malleshwaram and Vidyarthi Bhavan in Gandhi Bazaar (since 1943) for benne masala dosa; Mavalli Tiffin Rooms (MTR, since 1924), where rava idli was invented; Brahmin's Coffee Bar and Veena Stores for idli; Udupi Sri Krishna Bhavan (1926) in the old market. The Rameshwaram Cafe is the modern version, with an open kitchen and hours into the night.

Regional meals (₹–₹₹)

Nagarjuna on Residency Road (since 1984) serves the Andhra banana-leaf meal with refills until you say stop. Meghana Foods is the city's best-known biryani house. Anupam's Coast to Coast cooks Mangalorean ghee roasts and neer dosa; Halli Mane does rural Karnataka ragi rotti; Kamat Bugle Rock serves a North Karnataka jolada rotti thali on a banana leaf.

Street food in the evening (₹)

VV Puram Food Street lights up after 5 pm with a hundred metres of vegetarian stalls. Johnson Market in Richmond Town is the after-dark hub for rolls, samosas and masala puri. Karnataka Bhel House in Chamrajpet has set the standard for masala puri since 1975.

Fine dining (₹₹₹)

Karavalli (since 1990) for southwest-coast cooking, spiced without apology; Dakshin at ITC Windsor for all four southern states on one menu; Jamavar and Falak for North Indian; Farmlore, an 18-seat tasting room on a working farm at Yelahanka; Grasshopper, a set-menu garden restaurant in a plant nursery.

Old Bangalore and the world (₹₹–₹₹₹)

Koshy's on St Mark's Road, unchanged for over seventy years; The Only Place, a steakhouse since 1965; Sunny's for mild European food; Matsuri for Japanese; Burma Burma for all-vegetarian, alcohol-free Burmese; Naru Noodle Bar for ramen.

Where to go for what

Malleshwaram, Basavanagudi and Jayanagar, the old neighbourhoods of north-west and south Bangalore, are the tiffin heartland: CTR, Veena Stores and Halli Mane in Malleshwaram; Vidyarthi Bhavan, Brahmin's Coffee Bar, Kamat Bugle Rock and VV Puram Food Street around Basavanagudi; Taaza Thindi and Shivaji Military Hotel in Jayanagar. Go in the morning, when the dosa tawas (griddles) are hottest and the queues move fastest.

Central Bangalore (Church Street, St Mark's Road, Lavelle Road, Residency Road) has the old institutions and the hotel dining rooms: Koshy's, Airlines Hotel, Anupam's, Nagarjuna, Karavalli, Sunny's and Matsuri.

Indiranagar is the place for international food and a night out: Burma Burma, The Fatty Bao, Pizza 4P's and Toit.

✅ Good to know before you go

A few habits of the city's food scene save time and surprises.

  • Some legends take cash only — Brahmin's Coffee Bar, Veena Stores and Umesh Refreshments do not take cards; Umesh and Veena have no seats either.
  • Book the famous tables — Farmlore, Naru Noodle Bar, Pizza 4P's, The Fatty Bao and Burma Burma all need a reservation or a long wait.
  • 'Military hotel' means meat — In Bangalore the term means a non-vegetarian kitchen, as at Shivaji Military Hotel, famous for donne biryani.
  • Ask about spice — Karavalli, Nagarjuna and Meghana cook hot; Sunny's, Matsuri, Grasshopper and Burma Burma are gentle.
  • Vegetarian is easy — Most of the tiffin rooms, Halli Mane, Kamat Bugle Rock, Burma Burma and VV Puram Food Street are fully vegetarian.
