Commercial Street, Bangalore

Fashion & Tailors

← Bengaluru

Commercial Street is the old shopping street of Bangalore's Cantonment, in Tasker Town near Shivajinagar and a short walk from MG Road: roughly 2,000 shops along it and its side lanes, with clothes, shoes, fabric, jewellery and tailors. With Russell Market and St. Mary's Basilica a few streets away, it makes a half-day: market in the morning, shopping after.

Shopping

👣 A half-day in Shivajinagar

The order follows the morning: the market while it is busiest, then the shops. Places are in the lists above; the ones with their own page are linked.

  1. Russell Market

Russell Market is a covered hall of 1927 with an Indo-Saracenic front, selling flowers, fruit, vegetables and spices, with a corner of antiques. It is properly alive in the morning, when light falls from the high clerestory windows.

  2. St. Mary's Basilica

St. Mary's Basilica, Gothic and completed in 1882, stands directly opposite the market.

  3. Commercial Street and its lanes

Commercial Street runs between OPH Road and K. Kamaraj Road, with shopping spilling into side lanes such as Dispensary Road. Footwear is concentrated on Gollar Lane. Between the brand windows are lanes of bangles and old perfume shops, and tailors who will copy a shirt.

  4. Silk on K. Kamaraj Road

Mysore Saree Udyog, three storeys of silk, most of it with Silk Mark certification: pure-zari Mysore silk alongside Kanchipuram, Banarasi and other weaves.

  5. A snack break

Bhagatram Sweets, a second-generation Marwari name, has a busy counter on Commercial Street for samosas, kachori and gulab jamun. Vegetarian.

How to bargain here

Fixed-price showrooms stand next to stalls where bargaining is expected; at the stalls, starting near half the asking price is the local convention. The showrooms and the silk house do not bargain.

How it differs from the other shopping areas

Chickpet in the old town is the cheaper wholesale bazaar, best for silk and bargains in a crush. MG Road and Brigade Road, a short walk south, have department stores, fixed-price crafts at Cauvery Emporium and the evening pubs. UB City is the luxury end. For an overview of all the markets, see Bangalore markets.

When to come and how to get there

A weekday morning is the version of this street you can think in; weekends, and Sundays above all, are a crush, and trade quiets by about nine in the evening. November to February is the driest time in Bangalore; September and October bring heavy showers. The nearest metro is MG Road on the Purple Line, about 15 minutes on foot. The lanes are narrow and parking is scarce, so an auto-rickshaw or cab dropped close by is easier than driving.
