KR Market and Tipu's Palace, Bangalore

The Historic Core

← Bengaluru

KR Market is the oldest corner of Bangalore and best seen as one early-morning walk: the city's biggest wholesale market, whose flower trade peaks from about 4:30 to 8:00, then the Delhi Gate of the old fort and Tipu Sultan's wooden summer palace round the corner. By mid-morning the flower rush is over, so come at dawn.

Tipu Sultan's Summer PalaceThe finest surviving wooden palace in the city, and the shortest way into the Tipu Sultan story

👣 A morning walk in three stops

Market first, while the flowers arrive, then the fort and the palace once it opens.

  1. The flower market at dawn

KR Market (Krishnarajendra Market, also called City Market) opened in 1928 in the Kalasipalya area and is the city's largest wholesale market. Flowers and vegetables are on the lower ground floor of the central building; the wholesale flower trade peaks from about 4:30 to 8:00, with porters moving fast between loaded sacks of marigold and jasmine.

  2. The Delhi Gate of Bangalore Fort

What is left of the fort the city grew out of stands in the market traffic: the granite Delhi Gate, two bastions and a Ganapati shrine from Tipu's time. Kempegowda raised the walls in mud in 1537, Hyder Ali rebuilt them in stone in 1761, and the British broke through here in 1791. The wooden doors still carry their elephant spikes. Ten minutes is enough.

  3. Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace

A few streets away in a small garden: two storeys of teak pillars, cusped arches and balconies. Hyder Ali began it, Tipu Sultan finished it in 1791 and called it Rashk-e-Jannat, the envy of heaven; after 1799 the British ran their secretariat from it until 1868. A ground-floor exhibition covers Tipu's era. It is run by the ASI, open roughly from 8:30 to 17:30, with a small ticket and a separate rate for foreign nationals.

✅ Before you go

Practical points from the market and walking pages, which apply to this area.

  • Closed shoes — The market floors are wet and slippery, and the aisles are narrow.
  • Porters first — Give porters the right of way; they carry heavy loads fast.
  • Ask before photos — Ask traders before taking pictures.
  • Leave before the heat — There is nowhere to stay here: arrive at dawn and leave before the day heats up.

How it differs from the areas next door

KR Market is the southern end of the old trading town. One metro stop north on the Green Line, Chickpet and Avenue Road continue it as lanes of silk, jewellery and books that are busiest in the morning, so the two make one long morning. The centre around Cubbon Park and MG Road is the colonial and modern city, worth leaving for the afternoon. For a guided version of the old quarter and the market, see walking tours in Bangalore.

When to come

The hour matters more than the season: dawn for the flowers, the palace after it opens. November to February is the driest and most comfortable time; September and October bring heavy showers, and a wet market floor is harder going. During Bengaluru Karaga (12–20 April 2027, expected) the night procession passes the KR Market end of the old city, near the Kote Anjaneya temple. The nearest metro is Krishna Rajendra Market on the Green Line.
