Whitefield, Bangalore
IT Campuses & Breweries
Whitefield is Bangalore's eastern IT district, built around the International Tech Park and its neighbours. There is little to see in the usual sense, but the scale of the campuses, the breweries that grew up beside them and the Purple Line metro, which ends here and skips the road traffic, make it an easy half-day if work or curiosity brings you east.

From settlement to tech park
The district is named after David Emmanuel Starkenburgh White, founder of the Eurasian and Anglo-Indian Association. In 1882 the Maharaja of Mysore, Chamaraja Wodeyar X, granted the association about 3,900 acres for farming settlements. Whitefield stayed a small village until the IT boom of the late 1990s, when the export park with the International Tech Park became one of India's first IT parks.
👣 A half-day in Whitefield

- Dinner
YouMee is a pan-Asian restaurant with comic-book interiors and rolls, ramen and dim sum. More cafes across the city are on the cafes in Bangalore page.
- After six
The campuses empty into breweries and food halls. Windmills Craftworks combines a serious brewhouse with a jazz room, a library and fine dining, the grown-up end of the city's craft beer scene. More on the Bangalore nightlife page.
Should you stay in Whitefield?
Only if your work is here. It is a base for business trips; the sights are in the centre and the old south, and weekday traffic makes crossing the city slow, so for sightseeing stay near MG Road and come east by metro. See where to stay in Bangalore. Bangalore is mild all year, driest from November to February; in September and October heavy showers can flood roads, another reason to use the metro.
For contrast, Koramangala is the cafe district of the startup years, and Indiranagar the bar-and-brunch district closer to the centre, also on the Purple Line.
