👣 Walking the street end to end
The street is short enough to walk in one go; the order below goes from the Brigade Road end to St. Mark's Road. The places are in the lists above.
- Bookshops first
Blossom Book House is a three-storey maze of new and used books; The Bookworm, here since 2002, keeps about half its stock rare and out-of-print and takes books back for 50% store credit. The Book Fair sells second-hand titles for approximately ₹100–150 each.
- Something sweet
K.C. Das, from the Kolkata family credited with the rosogolla, has Bengali milk sweets and seating.
- Koshy's at the St. Mark's Road end
Koshy's has been on St. Mark's Road for over seventy years: high ceilings, creaking fans, filter coffee or a beer. The Only Place, a 1965 steakhouse known for hot apple pie, is close by on Museum Road.
- Evening
After dark the terraces fill. Socials works as a cafe and coworking space by day and a cocktail-and-dancing room at night; Monkey Bar, a gastropub, is a few minutes away on Wood Street.
Church Street, Brigade Road and the rest of the centre
Church Street and Brigade Road are often named together but are different streets: Brigade Road, part of the MG Road and Brigade Road area, has the bigger shops and the older pubs, while Church Street, which Brigade Road crosses, is the street of books and terraces. In 2017 it became the first street in the city paved with granite cobblestones, laid in a Kasuti embroidery pattern. A weekend car-free trial ran from 2020 to 2021 and was not renewed, so the street is open to vehicles; walk on the footpaths.
For luxury shops and hotel rooftops, walk on to UB City; for a green morning before the street wakes up, Cubbon Park is next door. Serious clothes shopping is on Commercial Street, north of MG Road.
When to come
Mornings are for the bookshops and coffee, evenings for the terraces and music. Like the rest of Bangalore, the street is pleasant all year; November to February is the driest time, and September and October bring heavy showers. It is also a New Year's Eve gathering place, so expect a crowd that night. Hotels are a few steps away around MG Road: see where to stay in Bangalore. App or prepaid taxis are the officially recommended way home at night; more in is Bangalore safe.
