👣 A walk from north to south

The order below crosses the park from the government buildings to the museums. Places are in the lists above; the ones with their own page are linked.

  1. Vidhana Soudha and Attara Kacheri

Start at the northern edge, near Vidhana Soudha metro station. Vidhana Soudha, the Neo-Dravidian seat of the state legislature built in 1956, faces Attara Kacheri, the red building of 1864 that now houses the High Court of Karnataka, across Ambedkar Veedhi. Both are seen from outside.

  2. Through the park

Cubbon Park itself: around 6,000 trees, bamboo groves, lawns and rock outcrops. On Saturdays look for Cubbon Reads, when strangers read quietly under the trees.

  3. State Central Library

The red-brick State Central Library, founded in 1915, is inside the park: high ceilings and silence, worth a look even without reading.

  4. The museums on Kasturba Road

The Government Museum, founded in 1865, holds the Halmidi inscription of around 450 CE, the earliest known writing in Kannada; the Venkatappa Art Gallery shares the site. Also on Kasturba Road, the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum has seven hands-on galleries and is the easiest stop with children. The Museum of Art & Photography is across the road from them.

Check the day before you go

Karnataka Tourism lists Mondays and the second Tuesday of the month as closed days for the aquarium, the State Central Library and the musical fountain; the Government Museum and the Venkatappa Art Gallery are closed on Mondays. A Monday is a poor day for this walk. On Sundays and public holidays several inner roads are closed to vehicles all day, which is when families and cyclists come.

How it differs from the areas around

Cubbon Park is the quiet middle of the centre. UB City is across Kasturba Road: luxury shops and terraces for after the museums. MG Road and Brigade Road border the park to the south-east and take over in the evening, and Church Street is a few minutes beyond with its bookshops. For the older Bangalore of bazaars, change at Majestic to the Green metro line for Chickpet and KR Market.

When to come

Early morning, while it is cool and the park belongs to walkers and runners; Karnataka Tourism gives visiting hours of 6:00–18:00, with morning walkers from 5:00. The museums open later in the morning, so the walk above fits a morning into early afternoon. November to February is the driest, most comfortable time; September and October bring heavy showers. The area has no hotels inside; any central hotel around MG Road is close (where to stay in Bangalore).
