MG Road and Brigade Road, Bangalore

Pubs & the Promenade

← Bengaluru

MG Road is the main east-west road of central Bangalore; Brigade Road runs off it to the south and crosses Church Street on the way. Together they are the easiest first base in the city: the Purple metro line stops at MG Road, Cubbon Park is close, and the shopping by day turns into the pub crawl of India's beer capital by night.

👣 A walk through the area

From the metro to the pubs; places are in the lists above, linked where they have a page.

  1. MG Road: crafts with a guarantee

From MG Road metro, start at Cauvery Handicrafts Emporium at 45 MG Road, the state handicrafts corporation's flagship. Sandalwood, rosewood inlay and Channapatna toys at fixed prices with a government guarantee: a useful benchmark before any bargaining elsewhere.

  2. Brigade Road: a hidden bookshop

Turn south into Brigade Road. Down a lane off it, behind a gate most people miss, is Select Book Shop, an antiquarian shop founded in 1945 with more than 9,000 second-hand and rare volumes. Ask for what you want; the shelves are not arranged for browsing.

  3. Church Street: two bookshops in a row

Brigade Road crosses Church Street, the street with Blossom Book House and The Bookworm.

  4. Lunch on Residency Road

Residency Road, which Brigade Road also crosses, has Nagarjuna, the Andhra banana-leaf meal with an unlimited vegetarian thali (the lunchtime queue is for that), and Karavalli, a long-running coastal fine-dining room.

  5. Evening: a rooftop, then a rock pub

Sunset from The 13th Floor atop the Barton Centre on MG Road, over Chinnaswamy stadium, then Pecos on Brigade Road: a rock pub open since 1989, three narrow floors of band posters and draught beer.

How it differs from the areas next door

Church Street is the cobbled street inside this grid, with bookshops, cafes and the same evening crowd. UB City, a short walk west, by Cubbon Park, is the dressed-up version with luxury boutiques and hotel-grade rooftops. Commercial Street, north of MG Road, is where the serious clothes and fabric shopping is, cheaper and denser than the department stores here. Indiranagar is the evening area further east on the same metro line.

MG Road itself was called South Parade before independence and was renamed Mahatma Gandhi Road in 1948; it runs from Trinity Circle to Anil Kumble Circle, with two metro stations on it, MG Road and Trinity.

When to come

Bangalore is mild all year; November to February is the driest stretch, and September and October bring heavy showers with local flooding. Within the day, the shops and the emporium are for daytime, the rooftops for sunset and the pubs for later. Brigade Road has long been the city's New Year's Eve hub, strung with lights along its length, so expect it packed that night. Staying here is covered in where to stay in Bangalore, and the bars in Bangalore nightlife.

Getting back at night

UK travel advice recommends app or prepaid taxis rather than hailing one on the street, especially at night and alone; in bars, do not leave drinks unattended. More in is Bangalore safe.
