Jayanagar 4th Block, Bangalore

Markets & Food Street

← Bengaluru

Jayanagar is one of Bangalore's first planned neighbourhoods, and its 4th Block is the commercial heart of the south: a market of jasmine and bananas, old sari shops and, in the evening, griddles frying holige and dosas in front of you. There is nothing staged for visitors here, which is the reason to come.

👣 An afternoon into evening in the 4th Block

  1. Metro and market

Jayanagar station on the Green Line brings you close. Walk the 4th Block market and its sari shops while the light lasts.

  2. Sweets to take away

Big Mishra Pedha, near Janatha Bazaar, is the city's specialist in Dharwad peda, grainy caramelised-milk sweets in the North Karnataka style.

  3. Snacks

Hari Super Sandwich, a vegetarian counter since 1999, griddles sandwiches to order with fillings from vegetables to chocolate or gulkand (rose-petal jam).

  4. Dinner

The food street by the 4th Block lights up in the evening. For a sit-down meal, Go Native is a fully vegetarian city chain with South Indian flavours and its own shops, and Meghana Foods, a much-loved Andhra biryani chain with a branch here, has veg and paneer biryanis on the same Andhra-spiced menu.

Jayanagar and its neighbours

Jayanagar's foundation was laid in 1948, and the 3rd and 4th blocks became its commercial hubs. Its older neighbour Basavanagudi is the morning half of the same trip: temples and flowers by day, then Jayanagar for dinner, since Basavanagudi goes quiet at night. Further south, JP Nagar is calmer, with parks and cafes. The cafe-and-bar districts are Koramangala to the east and Indiranagar.

You can stay here, in a residential setting near the metro, but most visitors come to eat; see where to stay in Bangalore. Bangalore is mild all year and driest from November to February; in September and October showers can be heavy, so keep an umbrella for the food street. More food addresses across the city are on the street food and vegetarian pages.
