Dharwad peda in Bangalore

Dharwad peda is a north Karnataka sweet, and Bangalore is the easiest place to buy it without travelling to Dharwad. The city's specialist is Big Mishra Pedha, with its best-known counter in Jayanagar near Janatha Bazaar and another in Malleshwaram. With Mysore pak, it is one of the two boxed sweets our Bangalore food guide suggests taking home.

Where to buy it

One specialist, two counters.

Big Mishra Pedha, Jayanagar

The best-known counter, near Janatha Bazaar. Grainy, caramelised-milk pedas in the north Karnataka style, with karjikai and other regional sweets alongside. Small, focused and reliably fresh. Price level ₹₹.

Big Mishra Pedha, Malleshwaram

The second counter, handy if your morning is already in Malleshwaram for CTR or Veena Stores.

Which one is the original?

A fair question, because the name on the box and the name on the registry are not the same. The geographical indication for Dharwad peda was granted in 2008 to a trust of the Thakur family confectioners in Line Bazaar, Dharwad, whose ancestors brought peda-making from Uttar Pradesh. Big Mishra Pedha is a different company and today the largest producer, selling across Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Telangana. In Bangalore it is the specialist counter; in Dharwad itself the Line Bazaar shops are the old address.

Whatever the shop, the style is easy to recognise: darker and grainier than the white pedas of the north, browned to a caramel edge and rolled in powdered sugar. The story of how the sweet reached Dharwad is on the Dharwad peda page.

Taking it home

Peda is boxed at the counter. It is milk and sugar with no egg, so it suits vegetarian friends; it is not vegan. If the box has a long journey ahead, ask at the counter how long it keeps. For other things to bring back, see souvenirs from Bangalore and the city's sweet shops.
