Tirupati itinerary: one day, two days or three

← Tirumala

A one-day trip to Tirupati works if your darshan is booked: the queue, not the distance, decides the day. With a booked slot you can see Padmavati at Tiruchanur, go up to Tirumala for darshan and come back down the same day. Two days add the springs, viewpoints and museum on the hill and the temples in town; a third day is for Chandragiri, Srikalahasti or the waterfalls.

Plan around the darshan queue

Free Sarva Darshan usually takes several hours and much longer on weekends and holidays. Special Entry Darshan (₹300) is sold online only, on the official portal ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in, and the quota goes fast; with it the wait is commonly one to three hours. TTD also provides Divya Darshan for pilgrims who walk up. Details in darshan at Tirumala.

TTD normally keeps the ghat roads open from 3 am to midnight, so the last trip down has to be before midnight.

Tirupati in one day

Trains, buses and roads from Chennai and Bengaluru are in how to get to Tirupati.

  1. Padmavati at Tiruchanur first

By tradition pilgrims visit the temple of Padmavati, Venkateswara's consort, at Tiruchanur, about 5 km from Tirupati, before going up the hill: darshan of the husband is considered incomplete without darshan of the wife.

  2. Tonsure and bath, if you have a vow

Tonsure is free at TTD's Kalyanakattas and done before darshan; TTD's dos also suggest a bath in the Swami Pushkarini tank and a visit to the Sri Bhu Varaha Swamy temple before the main temple. See tonsure and the dress code.

  3. Darshan and the laddu

Go up by APSRTC bus or taxi (see getting around), leave phones and cameras in the lockers and join the queue for your slot at the Sri Venkateswara temple. After darshan everyone receives a laddu; more are sold at the TTD counters nearby.

  4. A free meal and the Mada streets

Eat at TTD's free annaprasadam hall, then walk the four Mada streets that form a square around the temple, with the best views of the gopuram. If there is time before going down, the natural rock arch of Silathoranam is near.

Tirupati in two days

One night on the hill or in town takes the pressure off the darshan day.

Day 1: the temples of Tirupati town

Start at the Sri Govindaraja Swamy temple in the centre and the free Museum on Temple Art in the same complex, about 200 m from the station. Then Kapila Theertham, a Shiva temple with a sacred pond and waterfall at the foot of the hills, and Padmavati at Tiruchanur. If you sleep on the hill, Nada Neerajanam, an hour of free Carnatic music offered as worship, usually starts around 6 pm.

Day 2: darshan and the sacred sites on the hill

Darshan in the morning, then the springs and viewpoints of Tirumala: Papavinasanam, where pilgrims wash under spring-fed showers; Akasha Ganga, whose water is used in the temple rituals; Silathoranam, a natural rock arch; and Srivari Padalu on Narayanagiri, about 300 steps up to the footprints of Venkateswara and the widest view of the hill. The free TTD museum, a short walk from the temple, shows the processional vahanams and temple jewellery.

A third day: choose a direction

Distances are from Tirupati. Each option is a separate excursion; see day trips from Tirupati.

West: Srinivasa Mangapuram and Chandragiri

The Kalyana Venkateswara temple at Srinivasa Mangapuram, about 12 km, where tradition says Venkateswara lived after his wedding. Chandragiri Fort, about 12–13 km, was the last capital of the Vijayanagara empire, with the Raja Mahal museum; it is closed on Fridays.

East: Srikalahasti and Gudimallam

The Sri Kalahasti temple, about 36–40 km, is one of the five Pancha Bhuta Sthalams, the Shiva temple of air, known for Rahu-Ketu puja. On the same road, about 25–30 km from Tirupati, the village temple at Gudimallam holds what scholars take to be the oldest surviving Shiva linga in India.

Nature: Talakona and Kailasakona

Talakona, about 60 km, is Andhra Pradesh's tallest waterfall, about 82 m, in Sri Venkateswara National Park; it closes early, around 5–6 pm, so leave in the morning. Kailasakona, about 46–50 km, is spring-fed and flows all year. More in waterfalls near Tirupati.

With children

At the foot of the hills on the Alipiri road, the Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park, set in Seshachalam forest and closed on Tuesdays, and the Regional Science Centre, with hands-on galleries and a planetarium, are the break from temples.

When to go

November to February, on weekdays, is the most comfortable time. Crowds peak during Srivari Brahmotsavam (12–20 October 2026). See best time to visit Tirupati.
