Tirumala

How to reach tirupati

← Tirumala

Tirupati station (TPTY)

The town is one of the best-connected pilgrimage stops in the south, and the train is what most people use: the station is in the centre, a short hop from the buses going up.

Best option

Tirupati airport (TIR)

The airport at Renigunta takes flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and a couple of cities in Andhra. There is no direct flight from Chennai; from there it is the train or the bus.

Coaches from the neighbouring states

Buses arrive at the Central Bus Station in Tirupati, which is also where the vehicles up the hill leave from: convenient if you land in the small hours.

By car from Bengaluru

About 250 km on NH-71 and NH-716, four to five hours if you leave Bengaluru before the morning build-up. The road is good most of the way and the last stretch climbs to Tirupati through open country. Worth it if you are three or four people, or if you want to stop in Chandragiri on the way.

The bus up is paid, whatever older guides say; at peak times allow an extra hour at the Alipiri checkpoint.
