Uttar Pradesh for travellers: Varanasi, Agra and Krishna's Braj

Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, splits into two trips for a traveller. In the west, within a few hours of Delhi, are Agra with the Taj Mahal and the Braj country of Krishna: Mathura, Vrindavan and Govardhan. In the east, an overnight train away, is Varanasi on the Ganga. The capital is Lucknow; the official language is Hindi, with Urdu as an additional official language.

Cities

Varanasi

One of the oldest continuously lived-in cities on earth, laid along 88 ghats on the Ganga: sunrise boats, the evening aarti at Dashashwamedh, and the cremation fires at Manikarnika that never go out. Ten kilometres away at Sarnath the Buddha gave his first sermon.

📅 Oct–Mar (peak Nov–Feb)

Agra

Marble and red sandstone on one bend of the Yamuna: the Taj Mahal at dawn, the fort where Shah Jahan spent his last years looking at it, and the 'Baby Taj' whose inlay work the Taj borrowed. Most visitors leave by sunset; the old city's bazaars and petha shops reward those who stay.

📅 Oct–Mar

Mathura

On the banks of the Yamuna, the birthplace of Krishna: a warren of temples, ghats and bell-bright lanes that erupt into colour at Holi. The devotional heart of the Braj country, and one of India's most joyful Holi celebrations.

📅 Oct–Mar

Vrindavan

Krishna's boyhood country: some five thousand temples in a town of 85,000, the crush at Banke Bihari, the marble and light of Prem Mandir, quiet courtyards like Radha Raman where the ritual has not changed in centuries. Come in the cool months, and keep a hand on your glasses; the monkeys here are famous for taking them.

📅 Oct–Mar

Govardhan

A low sandstone ridge nobody climbs, because the hill itself is what is worshipped: Krishna is said to have lifted it to shelter Braj, and the way to honour it is the 21 km walk around it. Tanks, sandstone pavilions and prasad stalls line the route; most people come over from Vrindavan or Mathura for the day.

Two trips in one state

West: Agra and Braj

Agra is about 1 h 40 min from Delhi on the Gatimaan Express or Vande Bharat, which makes it an easy day trip. Mathura is about 1 h 40 min – 2 h from Delhi by express and 40–60 minutes from Agra. Vrindavan has no working station: trains stop at Mathura Junction and the last 12 km are by road, and the town centre is closed to cars. Govardhan is 30–45 minutes west of Mathura by taxi or shared auto. Ready-made routes: Delhi to Mathura, Delhi to Vrindavan, Agra to Mathura and Mathura to Govardhan.

East: Varanasi

One of the oldest continuously lived-in cities on earth, along 88 ghats on the Ganga, with Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, ten kilometres away. Delhi is 800 km away: the classic way in is an overnight train of about 12–14 hours, the day Vande Bharat takes about 8 hours, and flights take about 1.5 hours.

When to go

October to March is the season across the state, and May–June are the months to avoid: the heat is extreme, and on Govardhan's 21 km parikrama, which has no shade, it is dangerous. Within the season:

  • Varanasi peaks from November to February. From April to September it is out of season: summer reaches 45°C, and in the monsoon the Ganga floods the ghats, the evening aarti moves to rooftops and boats are banned.
  • Agra has dawn fog in December and January, which can hide the Taj at sunrise; the Yamuna can flood in the monsoon.
  • Mathura and Vrindavan are at their most crowded on Holi and Janmashtami, with a real risk of crushes in the temples.

(Season and transport data as checked on 5 August 2026.)

Festivals

Holi falls on 22–23 March 2027, and the celebrations in Braj start earlier: Lathmar Holi in Barsana is expected on 16–23 March 2027 (provisional); see also Holi in Mathura. Janmashtami, Krishna's birthday, is on 25–26 August 2027, with the biggest crowds in Mathura and Vrindavan. The Kartik month in Vrindavan runs from 27 October to 24 November 2026 (provisional). In Varanasi, Dev Deepawali lights the ghats on 21–24 November 2026.

The state symbols

Uttar Pradesh's bird is the sarus crane, the tallest flying bird in the world: grey, with a bare red head and neck, often standing in wet fields beside the farmers working them. Its animal is the barasingha, the swamp deer of wet grassland, whose stags carry antlers with twelve or more tines (hence the name, "twelve-horned"). The flower is the flame of the forest, or palash, a plain, crooked tree for most of the year that turns solid orange-scarlet in late winter. The tree is the ashoka, a small evergreen with drooping copper-coloured new leaves.
