Vrindavan keeps the rarest rite of the festival: Banke Bihari performs its Mangla Aarti once a year, at 03:30 on Janmashtami night, and the temple's access rules are currently set by a Supreme Court-appointed committee.

Where to watch

Shri Banke Bihari Mandir, Vrindavan: The annual Mangla Aarti at 03:30 and the 02:00–06:00 post-midnight darshan; the single defining event of Janmashtami in Vrindavan. Free darshan, no ticket. Ordinary summer window (roughly 5 March to 10 November) 07:45–12:00 and 17:30–21:30, with Shringar Aarti at 07:55; winter shifts about an hour later in the morning and earlier in the evening. Entry and exit gates are separate and one-way movement is enforced on the festival. Since November 2025 the Supreme Court-appointed committee has barred climbing the stairs on either side of the Jagmohan and barred darshan from there. The temple asks visitors not to bring children, older people, people with disabilities or anyone unwell during the peak hours of the festival night.

ISKCON Vrindavan, Krishna Balaram Mandir: The Vaishnava-calendar Janmashtami abhishek and midnight arati, and Nandotsava with Srila Prabhupada's appearance day the following day. Free entry, no ticket. Ordinary temple hours; the festival programme runs late into the night. Its Janmashtami date may sit a day later than the Banke Bihari and Janmabhoomi date.

Shri Nand Baba Temple, Nandgaon: Nandotsav the day after Janmashtami, in the village the festival is named for. Free entry. Darshan 05:00–14:00 and 16:00–21:00. About 10 km from Barsana; reached by road from Vrindavan or Mathura.

Shri Premanand Road and Jugal Ghat lane: The approach route to Banke Bihari used on the festival, and the walk itself. Pedestrian on the festival. Arrivals via Jugal Ghat exit by Gate 1; arrivals from Vidyapeeth Chauraha exit by Gate 4.

🎟 Free viewing

  • The lanes between Jugal Ghat and Shri Premanand Road, which are part of the event rather than just the route to it.
  • ISKCON Vrindavan's Krishna Balaram Mandir courtyard, which holds a large kirtan programme through the night with no ticket.
  • Prem Mandir's illuminated evening programme, roughly 19:00–22:00, which is timed to sit before the post-midnight crowds rather than compete with them.
  • Vrindavan's smaller Goswami temples along the same lanes keep their own festival hours and take a fraction of the crowd.
