Janmashtami: Krishna's birth night and where to spend it
The midnight Krishna is born again in every temple
Janmashtami is Krishna's birthday, kept on the eighth lunar day of the dark half of Bhadrapada. The whole day builds towards midnight, the hour of his birth: people fast, temples hang a cradle, and at midnight the infant image is bathed and the fast is broken. In 2027 the night is 25 August, with Nandotsav and Dahi Handi the next day, 26 August.
Birthday of Lord Krishna, with midnight celebrations and dahi handi
Krishna Ashtami, the eighth lunar day of the dark half of Bhadrapada. The central government lists the Vaishnava day in its holiday list, issued around July of the year before; the Smarta fast can fall a day earlier.
The legend
The cruel king Kamsa rules Mathura, and his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva languish in his prison.
At midnight Krishna is born to them. The guards fall asleep, the chains drop, the prison doors swing open.
Vasudeva carries the baby across the swollen Yamuna, while the serpent Shesha shields him from the rain with its hoods.
In Gokul the cowherd Nanda and Yashoda raise the boy, and he grows up the most famous butter thief around.
So on Janmashtami night everyone waits for midnight: at the hour of his birth the cradle is rocked and the fast is broken.

✅ True. The festival opens the kite season there, and kites go up straight from the rooftops.
Where to celebrate
Mathura ⭐
Mathura's Janmashtami is a midnight event at one address, the Bhagwat Bhavan inside the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi complex, and the whole city runs to a published traffic, parking and security plan for roughly two days…
Vrindavan ⭐
Vrindavan keeps the rarest rite of the festival: Banke Bihari performs its Mangla Aarti once a year, at 03:30 on Janmashtami night, and the temple's access rules are currently set by a Supreme Court-appointed committee.
Mayapur ⭐
At ISKCON's world headquarters the festival is two days, not one: the midnight abhishek of Radha Madhava, then Nandotsav doubled with the appearance day of Srila Prabhupada, and the accommodation is the temple's own…
What happens on Janmashtami night
The story, as tradition tells it: the cruel king Kamsa holds his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva in a Mathura prison. At midnight Krishna is born, the guards fall asleep, the chains drop and the doors swing open. Vasudeva carries the baby across the swollen Yamuna, the serpent Shesha shielding him from the rain with its hoods, to Gokul, where the cowherd Nanda and Yashoda raise him as the most famous butter thief around.
So the festival waits for midnight. Many fast all day, some without water. In the evening bhajans (devotional songs) start, children are dressed as little Krishnas with a flute in hand, and in the days before amateur troupes stage the Ras Lila (dance drama of Krishna and the gopis). At midnight bells and conches sound, the infant image is bathed in panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, sugar and ghee), dressed and laid in a decorated cradle, and the cradle is rocked. Then the fast breaks with sweets and prasad (blessed food): makhan mishri (butter with sugar crystals) and Mathura's peda (milk fudge).
The next day, Nandotsav, celebrates the joy of the foster parents. In Maharashtra it is Dahi Handi: govinda teams build human pyramids to break a pot of curd hung over the street.
Where to spend Janmashtami
Braj, the country of Krishna's birth and childhood, is the heart of it, and the crowds there are enormous.
Mathura: the birthplace
The midnight Maha Abhishek at the Bhagwat Bhavan inside the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi complex is the centre of the night, with LED screens for those far back. Entry is free, but phones, cameras, earbuds and other electronics must go into the paid cloakroom, and photography is banned throughout. Police close the city to outside vehicles for about two days (in 2026 from 08:00 the day before until 09:00 the day after). Arrive the day before, by mid-morning, and sleep within walking distance of the Janmasthan gate. Plan: [Janmashtami in Mathura](/en/festivals/janmashtami/mathura/).
Vrindavan: the one Mangla Aarti of the year
Banke Bihari, where the deity is a child left to sleep, holds no daily dawn aarti. The one exception is Janmashtami night: the temple reopens at 02:00 and performs its Mangla Aarti at 03:30, with darshan until 06:00. The rarity is why the crowd is so dense. The temple asks people not to bring children, older people or anyone unwell in the peak hours; entry and exit gates are separate, so leave shoes at your room. ISKCON's Krishna Balaram Mandir holds a free kirtan through the night, and Prem Mandir's lit programme runs roughly 19:00–22:00. Outside vehicles are barred from the morning before, so stay inside the town. Plan: [Janmashtami in Vrindavan](/en/festivals/janmashtami/vrindavan/).
Mayapur: ISKCON's two-day festival
At ISKCON's world headquarters in West Bengal the festival opens with the adhivasa (preparatory rite) on the eve, peaks with the midnight abhisheka of Radha Madhava and continues next day with Nandotsav and Srila Prabhupada's appearance day. Everything is free; beds are the temple's own guest houses, booked through mayapur.com. Mayapur is about 117–130 km from Kolkata, the last leg by toto and river boat from Nabadwip Dham, so allow half a day to get there. ISKCON's date may fall a day after the national one.
Beyond Braj
Mumbai and Thane build Dahi Handi pyramids from midday the day after; Udupi's tiger dancers (huli vesha) fill Car Street on Vittla Pindi, which follows the matha's own calendar and can fall a month after the national date; in Dwarka people break a pot of butter and dance garba; in Tamil Nadu tiny footprints are drawn from the doorstep to the shrine.
Crowds in Mathura and Vrindavan
Mathura alone expected more than five million pilgrims in 2025, and the Banke Bihari lanes are narrow. Movement is one-way, gates are separate and police manage the flow in sectors. Go with someone, agree a meeting point outside the cordon, carry only what you can lose, and step out of the stream if it tightens. With small children, older relatives or anyone unwell, watch Mathura's midnight on the LED screens or visit a smaller Goswami temple instead. At Dahi Handi, watch from a distance: pyramids do collapse.
