Janmashtami in Mayapur: two days at ISKCON's headquarters
The midnight Krishna is born again in every temple
Janmashtami, Krishna's birthday, is one of the biggest days of the year at ISKCON Mayapur, the movement's world headquarters on the Ganga in West Bengal. The festival runs over two days: the fast and the midnight abhisheka (ritual bathing) of the small Radha Madhava deities, then Nandotsav together with the appearance day of Srila Prabhupada, ISKCON's founder. Dates: 25–26 August 2027. Everything is free to attend; the hard part is a bed nearby, so book a campus guest house early.
At ISKCON's world headquarters the festival is two days, not one: the midnight abhishek of Radha Madhava, then Nandotsav doubled with the appearance day of Srila Prabhupada, and the accommodation is the temple's own guest houses rather than a hotel market.

Why Mayapur keeps Janmashtami this way
In the temple's own words, Krishna appeared as the son of Vasudeva and Devaki and spent his childhood at Gokula in Vrindavan; Janmashtami celebrates that appearance, and its climax comes at midnight. Mayapur, where Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born, is a holy place for Gaudiya Vaishnavas, and the ISKCON Mayapur campus treats the festival as a week-long build-up: the Bhagavatam classes in the days before focus on Krishna's birth and deeds.
The day after belongs to two celebrations at once. Nandotsav is the festival of Nanda, Krishna's foster father, announcing the birth to Vraja, and in Mayapur it is held together with the appearance day of A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder-acharya of ISKCON. For many devotees in Mayapur this second day is as important as the first.
How the festival unfolds
The detailed temple schedule is in the programme block above; this is the shape of it.
- The eve: adhivasa
In the evening an adhivasa ceremony is performed to invoke auspiciousness and prepare devotees for the next day.
- Janmashtami day
Thousands of visitors arrive, and the temple keeps the crowd moving with managed flow. The altar is decorated with flowers and Radha Madhava receive a new outfit; Bhagavatam classes run separately in English and Bengali, and samskaras for Krishna (name-giving, the start of his education) are performed. Devotees bring Ganga water for the abhisheka.
- Midnight
The grand abhisheka of the small Radha Madhava deities, with an offering of more than 400 dishes, a maha-arati and a second new outfit. The fast is broken after midnight with anukalpa prasada, grain-free festival food.
- The next day
Nandotsav and Prabhupada's appearance day, celebrated together on the same campus.
Practical notes
Mayapur is roughly 117–130 km from Kolkata, and the last leg is either by road from Krishnanagar or by toto and river boat from Nabadwip Dham station, so arriving takes half a day. The routes are on How to get to Mayapur.
- Which day is the fast? — Some years the almanac spreads Janmashtami over two dates. Check the festival date on mayapur.com for the day of the fast and the midnight abhisheka before you book trains.
- Dress — Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the temple.
- Stay within walking distance — The programme ends after midnight, so a bed in an ISKCON bhavan (guest house) or just outside the gate saves a night journey. Nabadwip across the river and Krishnanagar take the overflow. Options: where to stay in Mayapur.
- Monsoon season — Janmashtami falls in the monsoon, when the Ganga floods low areas and the boat crossing to Nabadwip can be restricted. Keep the road route via Krishnanagar as a fallback.
