Janmashtami in Mathura
The midnight Krishna is born again in every temple
Mathura's Janmashtami is a midnight event at one address, the Bhagwat Bhavan inside the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi complex, and the whole city runs to a published traffic, parking and security plan for roughly two days around it.
Where to watch
Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi complex (Shri Krishna Janmasthan), Mathura: The midnight Maha Abhishek and Maha Aarti at the Bhagwat Bhavan; the Garbha Griha marking the birthplace itself. Free entry, no ticket. Metal detectors and a bag check at the gate. Mobile phones, cameras, earbuds, remote car keys and other electronics are not permitted inside and must go into the paid cloakroom; photography and videography are prohibited throughout. Garbha Griha listed 05:00–21:30 year round; Keshavdev, Bhagwat Bhavan, Yogmaya and Giriraj Ji 05:00–12:00 and 16:00–21:30 in summer, 05:30–12:00 and 15:00–20:30 in winter. Hours are extended on Janmashtami.
Dwarkadhish Temple, Mathura: The city's other principal Krishna temple, with a special abhishek and cradle ceremony on Janmashtami. Free entry, no ticket. Ordinarily open roughly 06:30–10:30/11:00 and 16:00–19:30, closed through the middle of the day, with the evening window shifting earlier in winter. Janmashtami hours are extended but the exact festival schedule is not published in advance.
Vishram Ghat, Yamuna riverfront, Mathura: Yamuna aarti at dawn and at dusk, a short walk from Dwarkadhish Temple. Open riverfront, no ticket. The aarti sits either side of the Dwarkadhish darshan windows.
Panchjanya Auditorium, Dampier Nagar, Mathura: The official cultural programme of bhajan, kirtan, Braj folk and Rasleela tableaux in the days before Janmashtami. Programme ran 15:00–21:00 on each of the three days up to and including Janmashtami in 2026. No admission charge was announced.
🎟 Free viewing
- LED screens installed inside the Janmabhoomi complex carry the midnight programme for those far back in the crowd.
- When there is a drone show over the Janmabhoomi (500 drones in 2026), it can be seen from up to 3–4 km away, so rooftops and open ground well outside the barricades work.
- Vishram Ghat for the Yamuna aarti at dawn and dusk, free and outside the temple queue.
- Mathura's markets and main temples are lit and decorated for the festival, and the processions in the days before run through them.
