Delhi to Vrindavan
~2.5–3 h
Vrindavan lies about 11 km beyond Mathura, which is 145 km from Delhi, and no trains run to it, so "Delhi to Vrindavan by train" really means a train to Mathura Junction and the last stretch by road. A car on the Yamuna Expressway takes 2.5–3 hours and brings you to the edge of town, and direct buses run all day. Whichever you choose, the last few hundred metres to the temples are walked.

Open in India GOThere is no train to Vrindavan: book Mathura
The question of a Vrindavan station has a short answer. No trains run on the old metre-gauge branch from Mathura, and in June 2025 the railway ministry cancelled the plan to rebuild it as a broad-gauge line. A ticket "to Vrindavan" is not something Indian Railways sells.
So the ticket you need is to Mathura Junction (MTJ), a big stop on the Delhi–Mumbai main line. A convenient fast option is the Taj Express from New Delhi station; many other expresses on the line stop at Mathura too. Not every fast train stops here: the Gatimaan Express to Agra, for one, runs straight through, so check the stop list before you book. Seats open 60 days ahead and go quickly in season; IRCTC, the Indian Railways booking site, shows them first and without a markup.
The last 11 km: shared autos and e-rickshaws leave the Vrindavan stand in Mathura all day, about ₹20–30 a seat and 20–30 minutes. A whole vehicle is about ₹150–200, a taxi ₹300–450, a local bus ₹10–20 (approx., August 2026). More on the Mathura railway station page.
Landing in Delhi and going straight on
From Terminal 3 the Airport Express metro reaches New Delhi railway station in about 25 minutes for about ₹65, with the first train at 04:45. That is the station the Taj Express leaves from, so the connection from a flight to the train needs no road across the city. A cab hailed off the street at the airport asks 3–10 times the fair price; use the prepaid counter or an app. More on getting to Delhi.
By car or bus: where the road ends
By car the Yamuna Expressway is the whole route, and the Vrindavan exit comes before the Mathura one. The car brings you to the outer ring of the town and no further: at weekends and on festivals the centre seizes up and cars are turned back, so you park outside and continue by e-rickshaw or on foot. The last stretch to Banke Bihari is a knot of lanes that everyone walks.
By bus there are more than a hundred departures a day from Delhi, ordinary coaches and AC sleepers alike, booked through the bus aggregators. The road takes three to four hours, so most people travel by daylight. More on getting around Vrindavan.
Festivals and monkeys
At Janmashtami (Krishna's birthday, next on 25 August 2027), Holi (22–23 March 2027), Radhashtami and Jhulan, rickshaw fares go up one and a half to two times and the lanes fill from dawn; plan the trip and book the train early. From the first step out of the car, put glasses in a pocket and the phone away: on the open lanes the monkeys take both straight out of people's hands. Dates for the year are on festivals in Vrindavan.
