By train

Mathura sits on the Delhi–Mumbai main line, and many expresses between Agra and Delhi stop there: the official NTES enquiry (October 2026) lists dozens of trains a day from Agra Cantt to Mathura Junction, most taking about 35–60 minutes. The fastest trains do not stop: the Gatimaan Express and the Agra–Delhi Vande Bharats run straight through. Fares start at ~₹90 in the seating class and are higher in the AC classes (approx., August 2026).

Agra has two stations to know: Agra Cantt, the main one for the Delhi line, and Agra Fort, used by trains from Jaipur. Check which one is on your ticket, and check train times on IRCTC or NTES before you go.

Reserved seats open 60 days ahead and go quickly in season; IRCTC shows them first and without a markup.

At Mathura Junction

The station is 3–4 km from the temple core: too far to walk with a bag, and there is no city bus on that stretch. An e-rickshaw takes 15–20 minutes and costs ~₹100–150 for the whole vehicle (approx., August 2026).

Rickshaw drivers at the station quote newcomers two or three times the fare, and the word "temple" on its own tells them you have not been here before. Name the district or the street instead.

On Janmashtami vehicles are stopped about 3 km from Janmabhoomi, and everyone, taxis included, walks the last stretch.
