Getting there

Mathura to Govardhan

~30–45 min

Govardhan is 22 km from Mathura, west on the road to Deeg. It has only a small station on the branch line towards Alwar, so trains from Delhi stop in Mathura and the last stretch is usually by road. A taxi or a shared auto from Bhuteshwar crossing takes 30–45 minutes; a state bus is the cheapest way. The real planning is not the ride but the walk: the 21 km parikrama around the hill starts best before dawn.

From Mathura: taxi, shared auto or bus

In Mathura, transport to Govardhan collects at Bhuteshwar crossing: shared autos and state buses (from about ₹30) for the budget, or a taxi for about ₹600–900 (approx., August 2026). Shared transport is the cheapest; a taxi lets you choose the time, which matters when the aim is to start walking at four in the morning.

If you are coming from Delhi, the train takes you only as far as Mathura Junction; the whole trip is on Delhi to Govardhan. From Vrindavan there is no direct public transport: a taxi takes about an hour and costs about ₹700–1,000.

Govardhan is part of Mathura district, and with Vrindavan, Barsana and Nandgaon it belongs to Braj, the country of Krishna's childhood west of the Yamuna. The town itself is small; nearly everyone comes for the hill.

✅ Plan the trip around the parikrama

The walk around Govardhan Hill decides when you leave Mathura. Approximate prices from India GO data, August 2026.

  • Leave early — Pilgrims start between 04:00 and 06:00, or after 17:00 in the hot months. From April to June the tarmac is unbearable by mid-morning, so book the taxi for the dark hours.
  • Know the length — The circuit is 21 km, clockwise with the hill on your right, usually from Danghati and back: 5–7 hours in shoes at a steady pace, 7–9 barefoot with stops.
  • Or ride it — An e-rickshaw does the whole circle for about ₹400–600. Fix the price before it starts: newcomers get quoted ₹3,500 for a ride that costs about ₹500.
  • A shorter version — Walk part of the circuit and let an e-rickshaw take you to Kusum Sarovar and Radha Kund without the full 21 km. Route, stops and timings are on the parikrama page.

Two dates when nothing drives

On Govardhan Puja, just after Diwali (10 November 2026, then 30 October 2027), and during Mudiya Purnima in July (expected 12–19 July 2027), millions of pilgrims arrive and vehicles are stopped at distant cordons. On those days the 22 km from Mathura stop being a half-hour ride; plan to walk from the cordon or stay overnight. More on Govardhan Puja and Mudiya Purnima.
