About a week around Guru Purnima, the full moon of Ashadha, from six days before to the day after, when pilgrims walk the 21-km parikrama round Govardhan hill; the Mudiya sadhus' procession is on the full moon.
Mudiya Purnima and the Govardhan parikrama
A river of bare feet circling a sacred hill through the monsoon night
Mudiya Purnima is the Guru Purnima fair at Govardhan in Braj, when millions walk the 21 km parikrama (circuit) around Govardhan Hill, a low sandstone ridge worshipped as a form of Krishna. It is a state-run mela of about a week around the full moon of Ashadha; in 2027 Guru Purnima is 18 July, and the mela is expected from 12 to 19 July. On the full moon itself the shaven-headed Mudiya sadhus carry their procession around the Manasi Ganga.

The legend
Sanatana Goswami, a disciple of Chaitanya, lives in Braj in the 16th century and, tradition says, walks round Govardhan Hill every day.
👣
When he grows old, Krishna appears as a cowherd boy and brings him a stone from the hill bearing his footprint.
🌕
On the full moon of Ashadha Sanatana passes away. His disciples shave their heads and carry his body around the hill.
🪕
Ever since, on this full moon the Mudiya sadhus shave their heads and carry Sanatana's palanquin round the Manasi Ganga pond.
🚶
So in the week of Guru Purnima, the day for honouring teachers, millions of pilgrims walk the circuit round the hill.
Meaning
Disciples
Guru Purnima is also Vyasa Purnima: by tradition the birthday of Vyasa, who divided the Vedas into four.
Buddhists
Buddhists mark the Buddha's first sermon on this full moon, given at Sarnath to his five former companions.
Jains
In Jain tradition, on this day Mahavira took his first disciple, Gautama Swami, and so became a guru himself.
Rajasthan
A kilometre and a half of the circuit lies in Rajasthan. At the Punchhari ka Lautha temple pilgrims "sign in"; without it the circuit does not count.
Customs
🦶 Barefoot
Many walk the 21 km barefoot in seven to eight hours, keeping the hill on their right and finishing where they began.
🙇 Dandavati
Some go round in prostrations: lie face down, draw a line where the hands reach, then lie down again from it. Such a circuit takes one to two weeks.
🥛 Milk stream
Others carry a clay pot of milk and leave a thin white stream all the way round, some 40–45 litres.
Manasi Ganga
The circuit begins with a dip in the Manasi Ganga pond, which Krishna, legend says, created with his mind.

True or myth
You can take a pebble from Govardhan home as a keepsake.
❌ Myth. The hill's rock is revered as Krishna himself: it is not taken or bought, and by tradition comes only as a gift from a guru.
You can circle Govardhan without leaving Vrindavan.
✅ True. Four rounds of the Radha Damodar temple in Vrindavan, which keeps Sanatana's stone, are believed to equal one circuit of the hill.
Govardhan Hill is growing over time.
❌ Myth. Legend says the opposite: it is sinking into the earth. Once it stretched seven kos; now it is a low ridge.
Where to celebrate
Govardhan
On Mudiya Purnima, the Guru Purnima fair at Govardhan, the twenty-one kilometre parikrama of the hill carries crores of walkers over a week, and Mathura district runs it as a state mela with nine super zones and…
Why it is called Mudiya
The name goes back to the 16th century. Sanatana Goswami, a disciple of Chaitanya, lived in Braj and, by tradition, walked round Govardhan Hill every day. When he grew old, the story goes, Krishna appeared as a cowherd boy and brought him a stone from the hill bearing his footprint, so he could circle that instead. Tradition holds that Sanatana died on the full moon of Ashadha; his disciples shaved their heads and carried his body around the hill. Mudiya means "the shaven-headed", and every year on this full moon the Mudiya sadhus shave their heads again and carry Sanatana's palanquin round the Manasi Ganga. The tradition is now in its fifth century: the 2026 mela was counted as the 470th.
The day is also Guru Purnima, "the teacher's full moon", by tradition the birthday of Vyasa, who divided the Vedas into four. Jains mark it as the day Mahavira took his first disciple, and Buddhists as the day of the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath.
Walking the parikrama
The circuit is called saptakosi, "seven kos" (a kos is an old measure of distance). It usually begins with a dip in the Manasi Ganga, which Krishna, legend says, created with his mind, or at the Danghati temple, and many walk the whole 21 km barefoot in seven to eight hours, keeping the hill on their right. Some carry a clay pot of milk and leave a thin white stream all the way round; a few go in dandavati, prostrating, marking where the hands reach and lying down again from that line, which takes one to two weeks.
The stops along the way:
Jatipura, below the Mukharvind: the hill's "mouth", where the milk abhishek of Giriraj (the hill as deity) is offered.
Radha Kund and Shyam Kund: paired tanks on the far arc, a halt in their own right.
Kusum Sarovar: a sandstone tank with the 1764 chhatri of Maharaja Suraj Mal, the quietest handsome stop on the circuit.
Punchari ka Lautha: the hill's tail, about a kilometre and a half inside Rajasthan, where pilgrims "sign in"; by tradition the circuit does not count without it.
Along the route people hand out kadhi kachori free, and dal baati churma is the meal of the day. In mid-July the walk is hot and humid, with monsoon rain.
Crowds, heat and how to pace it
About 1.75 crore (17.5 million) parikramas were counted over the 2026 mela week, and Mathura district runs it as a state mela with zones and sectors, more than 1,100 buses and 50-plus special trains. Guru Purnima itself is the heaviest single day.
Walk on a mela day before the full moon, then come back for the procession on Guru Purnima.
Start before dawn and carry water; the heat and humidity of July are the real strain over 21 km.
Agree a meeting point (Manasi Ganga is the obvious one) and keep valuables to a minimum.
Do not take a stone from the hill as a keepsake: the rock is revered as Krishna himself and by tradition comes only as a gift from a guru.
👣 Where to stay and what to book
Govardhan's own beds are dharamshalas and ashrams, and they are taken.

Rooms and trains
Rooms about six weeks ahead; trains to Mathura the day the 60-day window opens.
