Getting there

Delhi to Govardhan

~3–3.5 h

No fast train goes to Govardhan and India GO cannot confirm a direct bus, so there are two ways from Delhi. A car with a driver goes all the way in 3–3.5 hours, down the Yamuna Expressway and then west past Mathura. Or take a train or bus to Mathura, 145 km from Delhi, and cover the last 22 km by taxi, shared auto or state bus. With the 21 km parikrama on top, the trip is easier with a night in Braj than as a single day.

✅ Two ways from Delhi

Approximate prices from India GO data, August 2026.

  • By car the whole way — About ₹3,500–5,000 with a driver, 3–3.5 hours via the Yamuna Expressway and the Deeg road west of Mathura. The car stays with you, which makes it the easy option for adding Mathura and Vrindavan to the same trip.
  • Train to Mathura, then the road — A fast express such as the Taj Express from New Delhi reaches Mathura Junction in about 1 h 40 min to 2 h, from about ₹90 in seating. In town, taxis, shared autos and state buses for Govardhan leave from Bhuteshwar crossing: 30–45 minutes, about ₹600–900 for a car or from about ₹30 by bus.
  • Bus to Mathura, then the road — UPSRTC and private coaches leave Sarai Kale Khan and Kashmiri Gate all day, about 3–4 hours and from about ₹210–250, no booking needed. From Mathura, the same 22 km as above.

A day trip or a night in Braj

The arithmetic is simple: 3–3.5 hours of road each way, plus 5–7 hours for the 21 km walk around the hill in shoes, makes a very long day. Pilgrims start the parikrama between 04:00 and 06:00, or after 17:00 in the hot months, and from April to June the tarmac is unbearable by mid-morning. That is why most people sleep in Mathura or Vrindavan and come out to Govardhan early. An e-rickshaw can do the whole circle for about ₹400–600, which brings a day trip within reach; fix the price before it starts, since newcomers get quoted far more. Flying in from another Indian city

International flights land in Delhi. For domestic flights there is a closer option: Noida International at Jewar (DXN), right on the Yamuna Expressway between Delhi and Mathura, from where a car takes about 1–1.5 hours to Mathura. The simplest plan is a car arranged through your hotel before you land; and check the airport's current routes with the airline.

Festival days: cordons, not roads

On Govardhan Puja, just after Diwali (10 November 2026), and during Mudiya Purnima in July, millions arrive and vehicles are stopped at distant cordons. A car from Delhi will not get you to the hill on those days; plan to walk the last stretch and to start the day before.
