Palolem and Patnem: the palm cove of the far south

The Palm Cove

← Goa

Palolem is a crescent bay in palms and South Goa's most popular beach: boats pulled up on the sand, cafes along the waterfront, kayaks on the water and, on a good day, dolphins offshore. It is busy but has no clubs, and evenings end by a fire rather than a speaker. Patnem, the next cove south, is the quieter half. Both are in Canacona, at the southern end of Goa.

A day in the cove

Start on the water. Kayaks are the classic way onto the bay, and boats leave from the beach for Butterfly Beach, a small crescent of sand just north, closed in by forest: the ride takes 30–45 minutes, often with dolphins on the way, though no one can promise them. Butterfly Beach has no shops and no lifeguards, and its sand shrinks to almost nothing at high tide, so bring water and check the tide before you go.

Back in Palolem, walk the length of the crescent and keep going south to Patnem. Goa Tourism calls Patnem one of the quietest and most secluded beaches of South Goa: bamboo and palm shacks, fewer souvenir stalls, almost no entertainment. It suits people who want quiet with Palolem's cafes close by.

End the day on the Palolem beach walkway. Dropadi is a long-standing restaurant there, cooking from the day's catch, with a full bar and a short vegetarian list. A drink at a shack and a fire on the sand is what passes for nightlife here, and that is the point.

Palolem or Agonda, and the rest of Canacona

Agonda to the north is the main alternative: a long beach of bungalows and small cafes with no dense building, and one of Goa's three designated olive ridley nesting beaches. Choose Palolem for cafes and company, Agonda for space. Beyond Agonda, Cola Beach hides a freshwater lagoon behind the sand at the end of a rough track, and Cabo de Rama Fort is a headland fort north of Agonda that people visit for the sunset, by scooter or taxi from Agonda or Palolem. To the south, Galgibaga, about 7 km from Palolem, is a turtle beach with almost no hotels. For a long sand belt with more amenities, Colva and Benaulim are further north.

In Palolem itself, Cuba Beach Bungalows has huts right on the sand; more options on where to stay in Goa.

When to come and how to get here

November to February is the peak and March is still good; in April, May and October the sea is often rough. From June to September the sea is closed under the red-flag advisory. In season, swim only between the red-and-yellow flags where lifeguards post them, never under a red flag.

The nearest station is Canacona on the Konkan Railway, about 3 km from Palolem; from there take a taxi or a motor rickshaw. Dabolim airport is 65 km away, and a prepaid taxi costs about ₹2,200–2,400. Uber and Ola do not work in Goa. See getting around Goa and sea safety in Goa.
