Candolim and Sinquerim: the calm end of the north
Candolim & Aguada
Candolim is the same long sand as Calangute, minus most of the noise. The beach runs south to Sinquerim and ends under the headland of Fort Aguada, with one of Asia's oldest lighthouses on top. The crowd is calmer and more family-minded, and the evenings are for dinner rather than clubs. It is in Bardez, North Goa, just south of Calangute.

Where to stay
From the main road to the fort: a route
Start with breakfast at Cafe Chocolatti, a long-running garden cafe on Candolim's main road, known for European-style breakfasts, savoury crepes and house-made chocolates.
Walk down to the beach and follow it south towards Sinquerim. The headland ahead belongs to the Taj Fort Aguada resort, Goa's first luxury hotel, beside the old fort; above it stands Fort Aguada. The Portuguese built it in the early 17th century to guard the mouth of the Mandovi and named it after its freshwater spring. Goa Tourism gives the upper fort's hours as 9:30–18:00, so for most of the year it closes before sunset: come in the late afternoon. The working lighthouse beside it keeps its own hours and adds an evening slot (19:30–20:30), and the former Aguada jail is now a museum with a separate ticket. A scooter or taxi takes the road up; a steep footpath of about 2 km climbs the headland.
Come back down for dinner at Seven Rivers Brewing, a brewpub in a Portuguese-style villa and beer garden at Taj Holiday Village, whose beers use Goan ingredients: the Poi lager is made with local bread, and the Kokum Gose with the sour kokum fruit.
Candolim or Calangute and Baga
The beach is continuous from Fort Aguada through Sinquerim and Candolim to Calangute and Baga, so the difference is density, not scenery. Calangute and Baga have the crowds, the water-sports stalls and the loudest bars; Candolim keeps the calmer, family end of the same coast. For the clubs and the flea market, Anjuna and Vagator are further north. Across the Mandovi lies the capital, Panaji, with the old quarter of Fontainhas. Inland, Sol de Goa in Nerul is about 1.5 km from Candolim beach; more in where to stay in Goa.
When to come and how to get here
November to February is the season: dry, a calm sea and every shack open; March and April are still good. From June to September the sea is closed under the red-flag advisory. Calmer does not mean unwatched: swim only between the red-and-yellow flags where lifeguards post them, never under a red flag. Weekends at the fort get crowded with photo shoots.
India GO's transport figures are for Calangute next door: Mopa airport about 35 km, Thivim station about 17–19 km, a prepaid taxi from Dabolim about ₹1,250–1,350. Uber and Ola do not work in Goa. See getting around Goa.
