Mandrem and Ashwem: the north for a reset

Mandrem & Ashwem

← Goa

Mandrem and Ashwem are the north's pause button: long soft sand, quiet creek backwaters crossed by footbridges, yoga retreats and very little after dark. Mandrem sits between Ashwem and Arambol, close enough to Arambol's energy to borrow it and far enough to sleep through it. Both are in Pernem, North Goa.

Along the sand from Mandrem to Ashwem

There are no monuments here, and the walk is the beach itself. Start at the Mandrem end, where creeks cut in behind the sand and footbridges carry you over the backwaters, then follow the shore south to Ashwem.

Ashwem is the more comfortable half: the Government of Goa describes it as a long stretch of sand away from the crowds, and it has plenty of good hotels and seasonal shacks right on the beach, some with spa and ayurvedic massage. There are no water sports here, and that is the point. Ashwem is also often called the cleanest beach in North Goa.

Go on south and the sand runs into Morjim. Between Ashwem and Morjim, La Plage opens roughly November to April. Yoga in this stretch lives in the retreats and small schools of both villages; yoga in Goa explains how to choose.

How Mandrem differs from its neighbours

Arambol to the north is louder, cheaper and more social: drum circles, jam sessions, a large long-stay crowd. Querim beyond it is emptier still. Morjim to the south is a little more upscale, with a large Russian-speaking community, turtle nesting and kite schools. Mandrem and Ashwem sit in between: quiet, with comfort close by.

That balance is why families choose Mandrem: Arambol's energy on one side, Ashwem's beach on the other, and nothing loud under the window. For clubs, the scene is further south, across the Chapora river in Vagator and Anjuna. More on choosing a base in where to stay in Goa.

When to come and how to get here

November to February is the season: dry, the sea calm and the shacks open. March and April are still good. From June to September the sea is closed under the official red-flag advisory and the shacks shut. Swim only between the red-and-yellow flags where lifeguards post them, never under a red flag, and not after drinking or after sunset.

Mopa is the airport for this stretch, and Thivim is the railway station for the northern beaches. Uber and Ola do not work in Goa; use GoaMiles or the Goa Taxi app, or a scooter with an international permit. Details in getting around Goa.
