Colva and Benaulim: South Goa's long sand belt
Colva & Benaulim
Colva and Benaulim share one long strip of South Goan sand: fishing boats pulled up on the beach, family-run hotels and no late-night party scene. Colva is one of Goa's oldest resorts, well equipped and busier; Benaulim, just south, is greener and more of a village, with guesthouses and local cafes for long stays. Both are in Salcete, near Margao.

Where to stay
A walk from Colva to Benaulim
Start in Colva, where the cafes, shops and hotels cluster near the beach. Colva was once the retreat of Goa's old elite, who came for their mudança, the seasonal change of air, and the village keeps some of their houses. Then walk south along the sand: the beach runs without a break towards Benaulim and on to Varca.
Benaulim is quieter, with fewer tourists. In the village, the Church of St John the Baptist in Povacao is where St Joseph Vaz, born in Benaulim and later a missionary in Ceylon, was baptised. Benaulim is also known as Goa's village of carpenters, home to hereditary woodworkers. Its old name is usually traced to "village of the arrow": in the legend from the Sahyadri Khanda, Parashurama shot an arrow into the sea and the waters drew back to where it fell.
Two more stops make it a full day. Goa Chitra Museum in Benaulim keeps about 40,000 objects of everyday Goan life, from farm tools to carts. And Ritz Classic, the Panaji thali institution, has an outlet in Benaulim.
Colva, Benaulim or Varca, and the rest of the south
The choice inside the belt is simple. Colva for comfort and convenience; Benaulim for quiet and a village to live in for weeks. South of Benaulim, Varca is a resort zone of wide sand and large hotels with almost no street life, and Cavelossim is more resort-like still. To the north, Majorda is about 5 km up the coast from Colva. For a smaller, prettier bay with boats and cafes, the far south has Palolem. Nightlife-wise, this whole stretch is calm: for clubs you would need to go north. Soul Vacation, a wellness resort a few minutes from Colva beach, is one of the stays on where to stay in Goa.
When to come and how to get here
November to February is the season, March and April are still good. From June to September an official red-flag advisory closes the sea to swimming and water sports. Outside the monsoon, swim only between the red-and-yellow flags where lifeguards post them, never under a red flag, and not after sunset.
Margao (Madgaon) next door is the main railway junction and bus hub of the south, and Dabolim airport is about 25 km from Margao. From Margao it is a short taxi or rickshaw ride; for trips along the coast, a rented scooter is easiest. Uber and Ola do not work in Goa. See getting around Goa.
