What Majorda is like
Majorda sits on the long sandy coast of Salcete, just north of the busier Colva. It is green, residential and lived-in: a parish village with houses among the palms, a railway station of its own and hotels along the shore. The Goa government's own description is candid: a beach with many hotels, "in no way comparable" to Colva just to the south. For people who prefer fewer crowds, that is its appeal.
It works best as a base. You get a beach for morning walks and swims, and Margao, the main town of South Goa, is close for markets and trains.
The village that taught Goa to bake
Majorda's claim to fame is bread. According to the Goa government's page, this is where Goans were first trained in baking European bread: the Jesuits found the best toddy (fermented coconut palm sap) here and used it to leaven the dough. The page goes on to say that Majorda's people are still Goa's best bakers.
The village also has a place in the Goan version of the Ramayana. Local tradition holds that Rama was kidnapped as a child and raised at Majorda, and that later, searching for Sita, he camped at Cabo de Rama, the headland further south that still carries his name.
The parish church is Mãe de Deus, the Church of the Mother of God.
