Cola Beach and Lagoon, South Goa

← Goa

Cola (Khola) Beach is a cove in Canacona, South Goa, between Agonda and Cabo de Rama, where a calm freshwater lagoon lies under palms just behind the sand, with the open sea a few steps beyond. Getting there is the filter: a rough laterite track off the Agonda–Palolem road, no bus service, and little on site beyond seasonal tent camps.

Between Agonda and Cabo de Rama a freshwater lagoon lies in a cove behind the sand, green under the palms, with the sea a few steps beyond it, the picture that gets South Goa called secret. The road is the filter: a rough laterite track off the Agonda-Palolem route, no bus service, and little on site beyond seasonal tent camps. The lagoon is calm and easy to swim in, while the open sea can pull hard, so read it before going in. Confident scooter riders or an SUV, and daylight for the way back.

What makes Cola Beach special

At Cola a strip of sand separates two kinds of water: a green freshwater lagoon on the land side and the Arabian Sea on the other. That contrast is the picture that gets South Goa called secret.

There is little on site beyond seasonal tent camps, so come prepared for the day.

Where to swim

The lagoon is calm and easy to swim in. The open sea is another matter: it can pull hard, so look at it carefully before going in, and stay out if in doubt. From June to September Goa runs an official red-flag advisory, with the sea and water sports closed.

How to get to Cola Beach

The beach lies between Agonda and Cabo de Rama, reached by a rough laterite track off the Agonda–Palolem road. No buses go there.

  • By car: the India GO guide recommends an SUV for the track.
  • By scooter: fine for confident riders. Rentals in Goa cost about ₹300–500 a day off season and up to ₹1,000 at peak; you need an international licence with category A and a helmet.
  • Taxi: Uber and Ola do not work in Goa. Use GoaMiles or the state Goa Taxi app, or agree a fare and a pick-up time with a local driver.

Whichever way you come, the guide's advice is to keep daylight for the way back.

Best time to visit

November to February is Goa's best season, the peak of the dry winter. October, March and April are still good. From May to September it is better avoided: in the monsoon swimming is banned under the red-flag advisory and the beach shacks close.
