🐒 Gaur (Indian bison)

The state animal of Goa. Gaur come down to plantation and village edges in the Ghat interior, and are the largest wild cattle in the world.

Bos gaurus

🐒 Olive ridley turtle

Olive ridleys nest on a handful of Goan beaches between November and March. Goa's forest department runs three designated turtle beaches: Morjim in the north, Agonda and Galgibaga in the south. Nests are fenced above the tideline and watched by department staff, and beach lighting rules change for the season.

Lepidochelys olivacea

🐒 Malabar gliding frog

The Western Ghats monsoon has become a wildlife season of its own, and the gliding frog is its emblem: bright green, red-footed, and found by torchlight beside a stream.

Rhacophorus malabaricus

🐒 Indian flying fox

Roost trees are often centuries old and known to everyone locally; the bats are fruit-eaters and important pollinators of mahua and silk-cotton.

Pteropus medius
