Dudhsagar Falls: how to get there and when it is open

← Goa

Dudhsagar is a waterfall that is at its loudest exactly when it is hardest to reach. In the dry season the way in is a shared 4×4 jeep from Collem through the Bhagwan Mahaveer sanctuary; from about June, when the rains come, the jeep road closes and what remains is a guided trek booked through Goa Tourism or the view from a passing train. Plan around the season first, and the rest is simple.

"Dudhsagar" means Sea of Milk, a fitting name for a four-tier 310-metre cascade in the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary on the Goa-Karnataka border. The falls are at their most powerful in the monsoon, but that's exactly when the only way in is closed: the 4×4 jeep safaris from Collem village run roughly from early October to May. During the monsoon you can only see Dudhsagar from the train window on the Castle Rock–Kulem stretch: getting off at Dudhsagar station is not allowed, and trekking along the tracks on foot means a fine (railway police patrol the line).

Getting there in season: a shared jeep from the association counter in Collem is about ₹500–600 per person (plus a forest fee and a mandatory life-jacket rental, ~₹50); you get around 90 minutes at the falls. The number of jeeps per day is limited: in December–January arrive at opening; by late morning there are no spots left.

👣 How to reach Dudhsagar in the jeep season

There is no road you can drive yourself to the falls. Everyone goes the same way: to Collem (Kulem), a village at the edge of the sanctuary near Mollem, and from there in a registered jeep.

  1. Get to Collem

Come by taxi, scooter or your own car as far as Collem. Private vehicles and two-wheelers are not allowed past the forest gate. For the 2025–26 season the Collem gate ran 8:00–15:00.

  2. Take a seat in a shared jeep

Jeeps take up to seven adults and leave in batches. The number of trips per day is capped (240 a day in 2025–26), and seats can be booked online through the Goa Tourism (GTDC) portal. In December and January come at opening: by late morning the day's seats are often gone.

  3. Stop at the Nature Interpretation Centre

Forest Department rules make jeep operators bring every group to the centre in Collem for at least 15 minutes before the ride.

  4. About 90 minutes at the falls

The jeep waits for you and brings you back to Collem. A life jacket is compulsory at the falls; plastic bottles, plastic bags and alcohol are banned. The total per person is in the card above.

Season and closures: why Dudhsagar is closed

The jeep route crosses forest streams, and the Goa Forest Department suspends vehicle access for the monsoon, from about 10 June. Jeeps return in October: in a normal year from early October (in 2025 the gate reopened around 10 October), but after a heavy monsoon the start has slipped to late October or even early November. If your trip falls in the first weeks of October, check that the circuit has actually reopened before driving out to Collem.

The Government of Goa's page on the falls calls January to May the sensible window for the jeep approach, once the rivers have dropped. The trade-off is easy to feel: just after the rains the falls are a white wall of water; by late spring the stream thins, but the road is at its easiest.

Dudhsagar in the monsoon: the guided trek and the train

With the jeeps parked, there are two legal ways to see the falls.

Guided trek. Goa Tourism (GTDC), the Forest Department and the Goa Forest Development Corporation run a trek with a nature guide, booked online at dudhsagartrekking.com. Trek entry through the Collem gate is between 7:30 and 11:00, online-booked trekkers report to the Collem office by 10:00 with photo ID, one guide leads up to ten people, and the daily number is capped. Tickets cannot be cancelled or transferred, and the organisers may cancel or restrict the trek on days with an IMD orange or red alert. In the rains the trail is wet and slippery.

From the train. The railway to Vasco da Gama crosses the face of the falls on the Castle Rock–Kulem section, so trains here pass right in front of the water. South Western Railway does not allow passengers to get off at Dudhsagar station, and walking along the tracks to the falls is trespassing: the Railway Protection Force patrols the line, and in July 2026 it fined 32 tourists ₹500 each under Section 147 of the Railways Act.

Swimming at the falls

There is a pool at the base, and people do go in, but only in a life jacket: it is compulsory at the falls, and you rent one there. The rocks around the pool are wet and slippery. Stay in the area the guides and staff allow, and keep children within reach.

✅ What to bring

  • Photo ID — Required for the monsoon trek; handy for the jeep counter too.
  • Water in a reusable bottle — Plastic bottles and bags are not allowed inside the circuit.
  • Shoes with grip and a change of clothes — The jeep track is rough and you will get wet at the pool.
  • An early start — Collem is a long drive from the beach belt, and the gate closes in the afternoon.

❓ FAQ

How do I go to Dudhsagar Falls from Goa?

Get to Collem village near Mollem, then take a registered shared jeep through the sanctuary; private vehicles cannot go further. Jeeps run from October to May, and in the monsoon the only legal way to the falls is the guided trek booked through Goa Tourism.

Why is Dudhsagar Waterfall closed?

The Forest Department suspends vehicle access for the monsoon, from about 10 June, because the jeep route crosses swollen streams. It reopens in October, sometimes not until late October or early November.

Is Dudhsagar Falls open today?

From October to May the jeep circuit is normally open, with the Collem gate working from 8:00 to 15:00 in the last season. In early October and in the monsoon, check the GTDC booking portal or dudhsagartrekking.com before setting out.

How much time do you get at the falls?

About 90 minutes, after which the same jeep takes you back to Collem. With the drive from the beaches, plan a full day.

Can I swim at Dudhsagar?

Yes, in the pool at the base, but only in a life jacket, which is compulsory at the falls.

Can I get off the train at Dudhsagar station?

No. South Western Railway does not allow passengers to get off there, and walking along the tracks to the falls is trespassing: in July 2026 railway police fined tourists ₹500 each. Enjoy the view from the window.

Is Dudhsagar Waterfall worth visiting?

If you have a full day and come in season, yes: the jeep ride through the forest is part of the trip. In the monsoon it is worth it only on the official trek or as a view from the train.
