Fireflies

In Goa the courtship displays peak from late May to mid-June, and naturalists recall that only twenty years ago fireflies flashed in large numbers around villages every monsoon and even flew into houses; lights and habitat loss have thinned them since.

Abscondita spp. / Lampyridae

Blue mormon

India's fourth largest butterfly is at home in the Goan Ghats.

Papilio polymnestor

Common crow

Its caterpillars feed on oleander and other poisonous plants, and the adults carry the toxins on, which is why so many other butterflies imitate it.

Euploea core
