Mahadev Temple, Tambdi Surla
The Mahadev Temple at Tambdi Surla is the oldest temple standing in Goa: a 12th–13th-century Kadamba-era Shiva shrine of basalt, in forest at the foot of the Western Ghats, about 65 km from Panjim near Mollem. India's tourism ministry lists it as open 8:30–17:30, and entry is free. It is a protected monument and an active shrine: shoes off, shoulders and knees covered.
The oldest temple standing in Goa survives partly because it was hard to reach: a Kadamba-era Shiva shrine of the 12th-13th centuries, cut from basalt and left in forest at the foot of the Western Ghats, far from the coast where later centuries were unkind to temples. The scale is small and the carving is not: fine relief across the mandapa ceiling, a stepped shikhara over the sanctum, a stream running past. Listed as a Monument of National Importance and still an active shrine: shoes off, shoulders and knees covered. About 65 km from Panjim, near Mollem.
The only Kadamba temple left in Goa, nine centuries of basalt in deep forest
Timings and entry
- Hours: 8:30–17:30, according to the Incredible India page of the Ministry of Tourism.
- Entry: free.
- Status: a Monument of National Importance and still a working shrine.
The temple stands deep inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary area, so there is little around it: plan water and food before you leave the main road, and aim to arrive in the morning, when the forest is cool and quiet.
Why it survived
The oldest temple standing in Goa survives partly because it was hard to reach. It was built in the Kadamba era, in the 12th–13th centuries, cut from basalt and left in forest far from the coast, where later centuries were unkind to temples. The Ministry of Tourism describes it as a rare example of Kadamba-Yadava architecture.
The scale is small and the carving is not. Look for the fine relief across the ceiling of the mandapa (the pillared hall), the stepped shikhara (tower) over the sanctum where the Shiva linga stands, figures of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and a headless Nandi, Shiva's bull, inside the hall. A stream, the Surla, runs past, and its sound fills the silence around the black stone.
✅ Dress code and etiquette
- Take off your shoes before entering the temple.
- Cover shoulders and knees: it is an active shrine, not only a monument.
- Keep your voice down near the sanctum: it is still a place of worship.
