Chorla Ghat, Goa

← Goa

Chorla Ghat is the mountain pass where Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra meet, 50 to 60 km northeast of Panjim. It is a road, not a ticketed site: free, open, with viewpoints at around 680 m. It is worth the drive in the monsoon, June to September, when cloud pours over the ridges and seasonal cascades run, as long as you drive it in daylight.

AreaChorla Ghat (Goa–Karnataka border)

Fifty to sixty kilometres northeast of Panjim the coast runs out and the Western Ghats begin: a pass where Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra meet, viewpoints around 680 metres, forest that holds mist most mornings, and seasonal cascades such as Vazra Sakla below the ridge of Vagheri hill. From June to September the monsoon does the real work, pouring cloud over the ridges; bring rain protection then. Goans drive up for the evening view, though the hairpins are best not taken after dark.

The Western Ghats an hour from the coast: cloud, ridges and monsoon cascades

What Chorla Ghat is

This is where Goa's coast runs out and the Western Ghats begin. The road climbs from the Goan plain through forest to a pass on the state border, and the reward is the view back over the ridges from viewpoints at roughly 680 m. Mist sits in the forest most mornings. Below the ridge of Vagheri hill, seasonal cascades such as Vazra Sakla appear after the rains.

There is no entry gate, no ticket and no opening time: what the card above lists is a location, not a monument.

Best time to visit Chorla Ghat

Each season shows a different side of the pass.

June to September (monsoon)The main season. Cloud pours over the ridges, cascades run, and at night frogs gather at foam nests over the water. Bring rain protection.
Outside the monsoonMist still holds in the forest on many mornings, and wildlife is most likely at the forest edges early and late in the day.
March and AprilThe cashew hillsides colour up.

How to reach Chorla Ghat

The pass is 50 to 60 km northeast of Panjim by road, depending on the route, and the road continues over the border into Karnataka. A scooter or a hired car with driver are the practical options.

Goans drive up for the evening view, but plan the return so you are off the hairpins before dark.

Road and weather

Do not drive the ghat after dark. In the monsoon, check the weather the same morning and turn back if the cloud is too thick to see the road edge. Stay on marked paths near the cascades: wet rock on a forested slope is slippery.
