Museums in Pune

← Pune

The museum most people mean in Pune is the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum on Bajirao Road: one man's collection of about 22,000 everyday Indian objects, from lamps and nutcrackers to carved doors. Around it sits a set of museums found nowhere else: a walk-through retelling of Shivaji's life, a cricket collection in an apartment block, a miniature railway city run as a show, and a bungalow of vintage bicycles. Below: what each one is, where it is, and what to arrange first.

Six museums and what each is for

Hours and tickets are in the cards above; the notes below are about what you see.

Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum: India in everyday objects

Dr Dinkar Kelkar (1896–1990), an optician by profession, began collecting around 1920 and kept at it for over sixty years, dedicating the collection to his only son, Raja, who died young. The museum counts about 22,000 objects, shown in galleries of lamps, musical instruments, textiles, ivory, arms and armour, puppets, carved doors and some 400 betel-nut cutters. The Mastani Mahal is a palace interior that Kelkar dismantled and reassembled on the premises, telling the story of Bajirao I and Mastani. Kelkar gave the collection to the Government of Maharashtra. More about the museum.

Shivsrushti: the Shivaji story as theatre

A historical theme park about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, created by the foundation of the historian Babasaheb Purandare at Ambegaon Budruk, on the Katraj bypass. Shows include Durga Vaibhav, with 3D models of nine forts, a revolving-stage show, a re-enactment of the escape from Agra and a Raigad 4D show. Blades of Glory: cricket in an apartment block

Recognised as the world's largest cricket museum, it fills one floor of a residential building in Sahakar Nagar. Rohan Pate, a former Maharashtra under-19 player, founded it in 2012; the 51,000-plus items include bats and kit signed by Bradman, Gavaskar, Kohli and Dhoni. Call ahead. Blades of Glory.

Joshi's Museum of Miniature Railways: a city that runs on time

Inside a house in Kothrud (Erandwane), a whole miniature city of trains, trams, flyovers and working signals runs through a scripted light-and-sound show of about 25 minutes, down to nightfall. The engineer B. S. Joshi built it with his family. Shows run every half hour and need at least four visitors; hours change by day, and on Sundays there are evening shows only, so check before setting out.

Darshan Museum: free, on the hour

Eight walk-through sets over 10,000 sq ft tell the life of Sadhu Vaswani, the Sindhi spiritual teacher, with holographic figures, life-like statues and theatre lighting. Entry is free; shows start on the hour from 10:00 to 17:00 and last 60 to 90 minutes. It is closed on Thursdays and stands beside the Sadhu Vaswani Mission, near Pune railway station. Darshan Museum.

Vikram Pendse Cycle Museum: shown by the collector

Three floors of a Karve Nagar bungalow hold more than 150 vintage bicycles, among them a 1914 Golden Sunbeam and a folding BSA Airborne paratrooper bike from the Second World War. Visits are arranged by phoning ahead, and Vikram Pendse tells the stories himself.

Memorials and old houses that work like museums

  • Aga Khan Palace is where Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba were held under house arrest; she died here, and her samadhi, the memorial at her cremation site, stands in the grounds.
  • Lal Mahal in Kasba Peth is a red-brick memorial rebuilt in 1984–88 on the site of the house where Shivaji grew up, with large oil paintings of episodes from his life.
  • Vishrambaug Wada, the 1807 mansion of the last Peshwa, Bajirao II, has a small Peshwa-era display inside.
  • The National War Memorial Southern Command in Camp carries the names of 2,847 servicemen killed in action since Independence, with a small military museum alongside.

Grouping them: old city, Kothrud, the south

Old city. The Kelkar Museum is in Shukrawar Peth, off Bajirao Road. The museum lists Shaniwar Wada, Lal Mahal, Vishrambaug Wada, Dagdusheth Ganpati, Saras Baug and Parvati Hill as its neighbours. The nearest metro stations for the old city are Mahatma Phule Mandai and Kasba Peth on the Purple Line (see Pune Metro).

Kothrud and Karve Nagar. Joshi's railway and the Pendse cycle museum are both in the western suburbs and both need arranging, so plan them together.

South, towards Katraj. Shivsrushti is at Ambegaon Budruk, and the Katraj zoo is nearby: the two together make a family half-day.

What to arrange before you go

  • Kelkar Museum: open 10:00 to 17:30 through the year, but closed on 26 January, 15 August, on Anant Chaturdashi (the last day of Ganeshotsav) and the day after.
  • Darshan Museum: closed on Thursdays.
  • Blades of Glory and the Pendse cycle museum: call first; Joshi's: check the day's show times.
  • With children: Darshan, Joshi's and Shivsrushti suit children best, and Lal Mahal has a garden that serves as a playground.
