Lal Mahal
Not an ancient palace but a memorial rebuilt in red brick between 1984 and 1988, on the site of the 1630 house where Shahaji Bhosale settled his wife Jijabai and their young son Shivaji. The original was where Shivaji staged his celebrated night raid on the Mughal general Shaista Khan in 1663; it later fell to ruin. Inside are large oil paintings of episodes from his life and a statue of Jijabai, with the Jijamata garden outside doing duty as a children's playground. Small entry fee, closed in the early afternoon, and a two-minute walk from Shaniwar Wada and Kasba Ganpati.
Where Shivaji's Pune story begins, two minutes from Shaniwar Wada
