Sunset points in Mumbai
Mumbai faces the Arabian Sea, so the sun sets over open water along the whole western shore. The classic sunset points are Marine Drive and the Malabar Hill gardens above it, Bandra Fort and Worli Fort with the Sea Link ahead, and Juhu Beach with planes passing overhead. Below is what each one offers, the rooftops for a sundowner, the dawn places for anyone searching for sunrise, and the months when the sky is clear.

Where to watch the sunset
All of these are free except the rooftops.
Marine Drive and Chowpatty
A three-kilometre arc of seafront from Nariman Point to Chowpatty beach, with UNESCO-listed Art Deco facades behind the parapet. The whole city comes out for sunset, and after it the arc lights up as the Queen's Necklace. Chowpatty, at the north end, serves bhel puri and pani puri. See Marine Drive.
Hanging Gardens and Kamala Nehru Park, Malabar Hill
Two free gardens at the crest of Malabar Hill. From the edge of Kamala Nehru Park the whole arc of Marine Drive lies below, and this is the classic place to watch it turn into the Queen's Necklace at dusk. The parks are open from early morning to evening.
Bandra Fort
A Portuguese watchtower of about 1640 at Land's End in Bandra, with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link straight ahead: its cables catch the last light and then switch on. Free, and busiest at sunset, so arrive a little early.
Worli Fort and Worli Koliwada
A small British fort of 1675 at the tip of Worli Koliwada, the Koli fishing village that predates the city. You reach the walls through the village lanes, and from them the Sea Link fills the horizon. People live here: walk quietly and dress modestly.
Juhu Beach
A long city beach in the north, where the sun sinks into the sea and planes from the airport pass low overhead. Families come in the evening, with bhel puri, pav bhaji and kulfi from the stalls. See Juhu Beach.
Haji Ali Dargah
The white shrine stands on an islet about 500 metres offshore, reached by a causeway the sea covers at high tide. Qawwali, devotional singing, starts around dusk. Check the tide table before you go and dress modestly. See Haji Ali.
Sunset with a drink
Three hotel rooftops are built around the view. AER, on the 34th floor of the Four Seasons in Worli, looks over the Arabian Sea and the skyline; dress smart-casual and book at weekends. Dome, on top of the InterContinental on Marine Drive, faces the Queen's Necklace. Asilo, on the 40th floor of The St. Regis in Lower Parel, is among the highest rooftop bars in India. More in rooftop restaurants.
Sunrise: three places that belong to dawn
On the west coast the sun rises over the land, so dawn in Mumbai is less about the horizon than about the city waking up.
Dadar Flower Market, from about 4:00, peaks between 5:00 and 7:00: porters with garland bundles, marigold, rose and jasmine for the temples and weddings. Ask before photographing anyone.
Sassoon Dock in Colaba: Koli boats come in before dawn and the fish auction starts around 5:00; by 7:00 it is done. Wet floors, strong smells, and cameras kept low around people working. See Sassoon Docks.
Banganga Tank on Malabar Hill, a tank of 1127 ringed by ghat steps and small temples, is best early, when the water is still. It is a place of worship, so dress modestly. See Banganga Tank.
When the sky is clear
November to February is the most comfortable and the driest stretch: no rainy days on average from December to April. From June to September the monsoon brings 14 to 23 rainy days a month and heavy cloud, and a clean sunset becomes a matter of luck. October is the transition, with about four rainy days. Marine Drive for the classic view and the Queen's Necklace after dark, Kamala Nehru Park on Malabar Hill to see the whole arc from above, and Bandra Fort for the Sea Link.
Can I see the sunset from Juhu Beach?
Yes. Juhu faces west over the Arabian Sea, so the sun sets into the water, with planes from the airport passing overhead.
