Sassoon Docks
The city's oldest wet dock, opened in 1875, and still its least varnished working waterfront. Before dawn the boats of the Koli community come in, the floor fills up, and the auction starts around five; by seven it is done. Since the St+art project of 2017 the warehouse walls have carried huge murals by Indian and international artists, and that is what put the dock on photographers' maps. It remains a workplace first: the floors are wet, the smells are strong, and cameras belong low and discreet around people working.
