Rooftop restaurants and bars in Mumbai

← Mumbai

Mumbai's best-known rooftops sit on top of its five-star hotels: AER on the 34th floor of the Four Seasons in Worli, Asilo on the roof of The St. Regis in Lower Parel, and Dome on the InterContinental at Marine Drive. All three are bars first, with food, and all are at the top of the price range. Here is how they differ, what to know before going up, and where to get a similar view of the sea for free.

AERThe definitive Mumbai rooftop sundowner: glamorous, safe and iconic, the reference point for the city's high-altitude bar scene.
AsiloOne of India's highest rooftop bars, prized for skyline views and Mediterranean grills.
DomeAn iconic Marine Drive rooftop with unbeatable sunset views over the Queen's Necklace.

Three rooftops, three views

The difference between them is mostly what you look at: open sea from Worli, the skyline from Lower Parel, or the curve of Marine Drive. Prices at all three are ₹₹₹.

AER, Worli: the sea at sunset

On the 34th floor of the Four Seasons, AER is the rooftop the others are measured against: an open-air terrace with the Arabian Sea on one side and the skyline on the other. It is a sunset place, with cocktails and small plates. Guests must be 21 or over, a dress code applies, and weekends need a booking.

Asilo, Lower Parel: the skyline and a proper meal

Asilo, Spanish for haven, is on the roof of The St. Regis, on the 40th floor and among the highest rooftop bars in India. It has the most serious kitchen of the three, Mediterranean-style grills from a Josper charcoal oven, and its Sunday brunch is an event in itself. The view is the towers of the old mill district rather than the sea.

Dome, Marine Drive: the Queen's Necklace

An open-air lounge on top of the InterContinental, Dome looks straight along the arc of Marine Drive. Come at dusk, when the promenade lights come on and the curve becomes the Queen's Necklace. It is the most south-Bombay of the three: white-on-white decor and the sea breeze.

Other roofs, mostly for hotel guests

Beyond the three bars, Mumbai's rooftops belong mostly to the people sleeping underneath them. Soho House on Juhu Beach has a rooftop pool and bar that catch the Arabian Sea sunset, but it is a members' club: the access comes with a room. In Colaba, Hotel Suba Palace serves tea and breakfast on its roof, and the hostels have their own: a rooftop firepit at goSTOPS in Masjid Bandar, a Bollywood-themed roof at Zostel in Andheri East. More in boutique hotels and budget hotels in Mumbai.

For an evening out with no hotel attached, the area to know is Lower Parel, where the old cotton mills have turned into restaurants, craft-beer bars and rooftops after dark. The wider picture is in nightlife in Mumbai.

Before you go up

Hotel rooftops have hotel rules.

  • Book for weekends and sunset — AER needs a booking at weekends, and sunset is the hour all three are known for. Book through the hotel.
  • Dress for the dress code — AER asks men to wear long trousers and closed-toe shoes and admits guests aged 21 and over; check with the hotel for the others.
  • Open air means weather — AER and Dome are open-air terraces, and from June to September Mumbai gets most of its rain, around 2,200 mm a season.
  • Watch your drink, and get an app cab home — The FCDO advises never leaving a drink unattended or accepting one from a stranger, and not hailing taxis on the street alone at night: Uber and Ola work across the city.

The same view, for free

The view from Dome is the one the whole city comes out for, and it costs nothing at street level. Walk Marine Drive at sunset, when the lights come on along the three-kilometre arc, or climb to the Hanging Gardens and Kamala Nehru Park at the top of Malabar Hill, which look down over the whole curve. In the north, Bandra Fort faces the Sea Link head-on and is busiest at sunset, so arrive a little early. More viewpoints in sunset points in Mumbai.
