Budget hotels and hostels in Mumbai
Cheap beds in Mumbai come down to one choice: stay in the south, near the Gateway of India, Marine Drive and the museums, or in Andheri, close to the airport and a long way from all of it. The three hostels above cover both. Here is how to decide, and what to look at if a dorm is not for you.

Three hostels, two parts of the city
All three are traveller hostels with dormitories and the social spaces that come with them.
Colaba: Backpacker Panda
Backpacker Panda fills a building more than a century old in Colaba, the classic traveller base, within walking distance of the Gateway of India and Colaba Causeway. Dorms and private rooms have air conditioning, and the old Bombay building gives it more character than a chain.
South Mumbai: goSTOPS, Masjid Bandar
goSTOPS sits in Masjid Bandar, by the old bazaar quarter, a short ride from the Gateway of India, Marine Drive and CST station. It has a rooftop firepit, a library and a tour desk.
Near the airport: Zostel, Andheri East
Zostel Mumbai, part of India's most established hostel chain, is in Marol, Andheri East, about four kilometres from the international terminal: handy for flights, a fair haul from the southern sights. Expect air-conditioned dorms and private rooms, a cafe and a Bollywood-themed rooftop.
If a dorm is not for you
The step up from a hostel in the guide is a handful of simple hotels in the south. Residency Hotel Fort keeps compact, well-kept rooms in the Fort business district, with breakfast and afternoon tea, and the Gateway, Colaba Causeway and Marine Drive within easy reach. Hotel Suba Palace is a short walk from the Gateway in Colaba, with a rooftop breakfast; the building shows its age and there is one lift. Sea Green Hotel is one of the original 1930s Art Deco buildings on Marine Drive, with spacious, simply furnished sea-facing rooms and no spa or rooftop bar.

Before you book
- Location over the bed. Mumbai runs north to south for a long way, and the south (Colaba, the Fort) is where most first-time sights are. From a cheap bed in the north, every trip into town is a long ride.
- Check your airport. Andheri is close to BOM, the main airport. The new Navi Mumbai airport (NMI) is about 40 km from South Mumbai, so a bed in Andheri does not help with an NMI flight. See the airport page.
- Longer stays. Bandra is the favourite base for a longer stay; Dadar has a station on both the Western and Central suburban lines, so South Mumbai is one direct train away.
- Student hostels are a different thing. Many results for hostels in Mumbai are long-stay student or working hostels; the three above take nightly bookings from travellers.
- Monsoon. From June to September heavy rain disrupts trains and flights; a central base cuts the commuting.
