Best time to visit Mumbai
The best time to visit Mumbai is November to February: rain falls on almost no days, nights drop to about 17–21 °C and humidity is at its lowest of the year. Do not expect cold. Days stay at 31–34 °C all winter. The month that decides a Mumbai trip is not a cool one but a dry one: from June to September the south-west monsoon brings well over 2,000 mm of rain, with red alerts and disruption to trains and flights.

Season by season
November to February: the season. The guide rates these four months best. Rain falls on zero or one day a month, humidity is around 60%, and nights are at their coolest, about 17–18 °C from December to February. Days still reach 31–34 °C.
March and April: hot but dry. The guide rates them good. There is still no rain, but nights warm to 21–24 °C. Plan walks for the morning and the evening.
May: the heavy month before the rains. Days of 34 °C, nights of 27 °C and rising humidity; the guide advises against it. This is when the gulmohar trees flower and whole south-city avenues turn scarlet, the clearest sign that the monsoon is close.
June to September: the monsoon. The guide advises against all four months. July is the wettest, at roughly 920 mm over 23 rainy days; June and August bring about 530–560 mm each and September about 380 mm. Humidity sits at 77–84%. Expect red alerts, flooded roads and disruption to the suburban trains and to flights.
October: the turn. Rain drops to about four days and 90 mm, but days are among the hottest of the year, 34 °C, with humidity still near 70%. The guide rates it good.

When to go for what
Festival dates come from the guide's calendar.
Ganesh Chaturthi: 4–14 September 2027
Mumbai's signature festival and the one reason to come in the monsoon: ten days of neighbourhood pandals and an eleventh on which the city carries its idols into the sea at Girgaum Chowpatty, Juhu, Dadar and Versova. Book rooms about six weeks ahead; trains out of Mumbai towards the Konkan coast sell out within minutes of opening, 60 days ahead. More: Ganesh Chaturthi.
Kala Ghoda Arts Festival: 30 January – 7 February 2027
In the dry season: the heritage precinct of Kala Ghoda becomes open galleries, stages and craft stalls, all free to attend. Rooms in Colaba and Fort fill for the festival weekends, so book about a month ahead.
Navratri and Diwali: 11–19 October 2026 (expected); 6–11 November 2026
Navratri falls at the turn of the season, in late September or October: nine nights of ticketed garba and dandiya on booked grounds, with a 10 pm loudspeaker deadline on most nights. Mumbai is not a Diwali destination the way Jaipur or Varanasi is, and in Maharashtra the mornings matter as much as the evenings: the Diwali Pahat recitals of classical and devotional music start at dawn. The hard part is trains out of the city, so book onward tickets the day sales open.
Flamingos: January to May
Boats on Thane Creek run roughly from October to May, with the fullest flocks around March and April.
Christmas: 25 December 2026
Because of Maharashtra's night-time loudspeaker ban, carols start around 9:30 pm and mass around 10 pm at many parishes. A month ahead for rooms is enough.
If you travel in the monsoon
The monsoon changes the plan. Elephanta sailings are cancelled by weather in the monsoon, so check the sea before building a day around the caves. The heritage trust that runs the Art Deco walks around the Oval Maidan suspends them in the monsoon, and Worli Koliwada is quieter during the monsoon fishing ban. Keep a margin before flights and long-distance trains: red alerts disrupt both.
