Mumbai weather
Best time: Nov–Feb
Mumbai is warm all year, between 17 and 34°C on average, and the weather comes down to one question: is it monsoon? From June to September the city gets more than 2,000 mm of rain, almost all of its annual total, and July alone averages about 920 mm. From November to February it is dry, the air is at its least humid and nights drop to around 17–18°C. That dry winter is the best time to visit; the month-by-month table above has the figures.

December to February: dry winter
Days of 31–33°C, nights of 17–18°C, almost no rain and humidity around 60%. The most comfortable months, and the busiest for travel and events such as the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival (30 January – 7 February 2027).
March to May: the build-up
Highs stay at 33–34°C but nights climb to 27°C by May and humidity rises to around 67%. Still dry; May is the most oppressive month before the rains. The gulmohar flowers in May.
June to September: monsoon
Rain on 14–23 days a month and humidity of 77–84%. July is the wettest, with about 920 mm on average. Heavy days bring waterlogging and disruption to suburban trains and flights. Ganesh Chaturthi (4–14 September 2027) falls in this season.
October and November: after the rains
October is a transition: about 91 mm of rain on 4 days and highs of 34°C, with humid heat after the rains. By November rain is rare and humidity falls back to 60%. Diwali (6–11 November 2026) usually lands in one of these two months.
When the monsoon comes and goes
The India Meteorological Department's normal date for the monsoon to reach Mumbai is 11 June; the normal date of withdrawal is 8 October. Real years vary widely, so for a trip around these dates watch the forecast rather than the calendar.
The heaviest single day on record was 26 July 2005, when Santacruz received 944 mm in 24 hours and the city flooded. Arabian Sea cyclones more often turn towards Gujarat or the Arabian Peninsula, but some affect the city: Cyclone Tauktae in 2021 halted flights at the airport for hours.
Warnings come from the IMD's Regional Meteorological Centre Mumbai as colour-coded alerts; a red alert means extremely heavy rain is expected. On those days keep journeys short and allow for train and flight delays. More on safety in Mumbai.
Which month to choose
November to February is the best window: dry, sunny and as cool as Mumbai gets. October, March and April are good but hot. May and the monsoon months are the ones to avoid unless you come for the rain itself. For each month in detail, see January, July or October, and the full guide to the best time to visit.
