Breakfast places in Kochi
A Kochi breakfast is usually Kerala tiffin: puttu with black chickpea curry, appam with stew, idiyappam or a crisp dosa, with filter coffee or sweet tea. Eat it at a vegetarian tiffin house in Ernakulam or Mattancherry, or take a slower cafe breakfast in Fort Kochi. The list below mixes both; here is how to choose.

What is on a Kerala breakfast plate
Four things to look for on the board; most of them are vegan by default.
Puttu with kadala
Rice flour and grated coconut steamed in a tube until it slides out as a warm cylinder, eaten with black chickpeas in a dark coconut gravy. Break it into the curry with your fingers. More about the dish.
Appam with stew
A lacy fermented rice pancake, thick at the centre and thin at the rim, with a mild coconut-milk vegetable stew poured into the middle. Tear from the thin edge. More.
Idiyappam
Rice noodles pressed into nests and steamed, eaten with coconut milk and sugar, or with a vegetable stew. More.
Dosa, idli and a hot drink
The South Indian tiffin found across the south, with filter coffee or nadan chaya, Kerala tea poured between two glasses until it foams. The default is very sweet.
How to choose: five kinds of breakfast
Prices run from ₹ at tiffin houses to ₹₹ at cafes; the most local breakfast is usually the cheapest.
Kerala breakfast specialists (₹₹)
Dhe Puttu in Edappally, the chain co-founded by the Malayalam actor Dileep and the director Nadirshah, makes puttu in dozens of forms, from classic kadala to chocolate-banana wheat puttu, with a free glass of sulaimani tea; expect a short wait at peak hours. Gokul Oottupura, a pure-vegetarian house with branches on Marine Drive, MG Road and in Edappally, serves appam, idiyappam and puttu earlier in the day.
Tiffin and dosa (₹–₹₹)
Pai Brothers in Kadavanthra is known for its dosas, more than thirty-six kinds, down to the paper-thin leaf dosa. Hotel Saravana Bhavan at Kacheripady does masala dosa, ghee roast, idli and vada. Sri Krishna Cafe is the old-style vegetarian tiffin stop in Mattancherry, after the Jew Town lanes. BTH Sarovaram at Kundannoor, Maradu, has dosas and uthappams in a garden setting.
The coffee house classic (₹)
Indian Coffee House in Ernakulam is cooperative-run, with uniformed waiters and interiors little changed in decades. Order a masala dosa, a vegetable cutlet or Bombay toast with the milky filter coffee.
A cafe breakfast in Fort Kochi (₹₹)
Kashi Art Cafe, in a heritage bungalow with a courtyard, has served unhurried breakfasts since the late 1990s. Qissa Café and Loafers Corner Cafe have breakfast menus and suit a morning with a laptop; Loafers has stable wifi. Chez Teapot does light breakfasts and pots of tea among antique teapots. Loving Earth Yoga Cafe on Napier Street is fully vegan, with smoothie bowls, but it opens only at midday, so it is a late breakfast.
Brunch and bakeries in Ernakulam (₹–₹₹)
French Toast Bakery, with several outlets, is the brunch favourite: French toasts (the banoffee one), fresh bread and all-day breakfasts. Cafficana in Panampilly Nagar brews Indian single-origin beans and has an all-day menu from late morning (it opens at 11:30). For something on the go, Ceylon Bake House on Broadway (its roots go back to 1953) sells veg and egg puffs, cutlets and dilkush, and Society Bakery near Shenoy's Junction has puffs and cream buns for very little.
Where to go by area
Fort Kochi is for cafe breakfasts: Kashi, Qissa, Chez Teapot, Loafers Corner and Loving Earth are a short walk apart. Mattancherry and Jew Town add Sri Krishna Cafe for tiffin and the art cafes on Jew Town Road (Art Cafe, Mocha Art Café). Central Ernakulam (Kacheripady, MG Road, Marine Drive, Broadway, Shenoy's Junction) has the tiffin houses, Indian Coffee House and the old bakeries. Panampilly Nagar and Kadavanthra have Cafficana and Pai Brothers; Edappally, by Lulu Mall, has Dhe Puttu and a Gokul Oottupura branch.
If you stay in Fort Kochi and want a tiffin breakfast in Ernakulam, the ferry across takes about 20 minutes; the getting around page has the boats.
Good to know
A few details that save time and surprises.
- Vegetarian by default — Gokul Oottupura, Hotel Saravana Bhavan, Sri Krishna Cafe and BTH Sarovaram are pure-vegetarian. At Ceylon Bake House the famous biryani is meat, but the counter has veg puffs; at Society Bakery ask for the vegetable puff, as both kinds are sold. More on the vegetarian page.
- Plan around the queues and hours — Dhe Puttu has a short wait at peak times. Pepper House Cafe, in an old spice warehouse by the water, keeps irregular hours, so check before going specially. For coffee-first mornings, see the cafes of Kochi.
