How to get around Kochi
Kochi is a city of islands, and the fastest way across it is often a boat. Between Ernakulam on the mainland and old Fort Kochi the ferry takes about 20 minutes, while the road loops round through traffic. Taxis through Uber and Ola work well for luggage and the airport; for everything else, combine the water, the metro and an auto-rickshaw for the last kilometre.
Water Metro
Air-conditioned electric catamarans, 7:00 to 20:00, every 15 minutes at peak. High Court to Fort Kochi takes about 20 minutes for ₹40; other routes run to Vypin, Mattancherry and Kakkanad. Transfers to the metro at Vyttila and High Court.
~₹20–40
State SWTD ferries
The old boats: Ernakulam to Fort Kochi in about 20 minutes from around 6:00 to 21:10, and Fort Kochi to Vypin every ten minutes. Same water as the Water Metro, without the air conditioning.
~₹6
Kochi Metro: the Blue Line
One line of 25 stations from Aluva to Tripunithura; Phase I is finished and running. It works the mainland; Fort Kochi is reached over the water, not by rail.
~₹10–60
Auto-rickshaws
Fine for the last kilometre from a jetty or a station. In Fort Kochi drivers offer sightseeing tours: agree the price and the stops before you start.
from ~₹30
Cabs through apps
Uber and Ola work normally. Handy with luggage, but Ernakulam jams up and the boat often gets there first.
from ~₹150 around Ernakulam
In the June–September monsoon heavy rain interrupts the ferries and the Water Metro, so keep a land route in reserve.
How the city is laid out
Three parts matter for a visit. Ernakulam is the mainland centre: Marine Drive, MG Road, the railway stations, the malls and the metro. Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, next to each other on the peninsula across the harbour, have the Chinese nets, the churches, the palace and Jew Town. Islands such as Willingdon, Bolgatty and Vypin lie around the harbour.
The rule that follows: the metro works the mainland, the boats connect the mainland with the old town, and autos fill the gaps. Fort Kochi is not on the metro.
Taxis and app cabs
Uber and Ola work normally in Kochi. Around Ernakulam a ride starts from about ₹150. Cabs are the easy choice with luggage, at night and to the airport, but Ernakulam jams at rush hour, and for Fort Kochi the boat often arrives first.
From the airport (Cochin International, COK, at Nedumbassery) the CIAL prepaid taxi counter works around the clock and charges by zone, so the fare is settled before you leave the building: approximately ₹900–1,100 to Fort Kochi, an hour to an hour and a half on the road. Uber and Ola also pick up at the airport and, outside peak hours, come out roughly ₹200–500 cheaper. The budget alternative is a bus to Aluva metro station, about 15 km, and the metro into the city: approximately ₹100 for the whole way. More on the airport page.
Auto-rickshaws are fine for short hops from a jetty or a metro station, from about ₹30. In Fort Kochi drivers offer sightseeing "tours": agree the price and the list of stops before you get in.
By water: Water Metro or the old ferry
Two systems cross the same harbour.
The Kochi Water Metro, run by Kochi Metro Rail and the first water metro in India, uses air-conditioned electric boats from about 7:00 to 20:00, every 15 minutes at peak. High Court to Fort Kochi takes about 20 minutes for approximately ₹40; other routes run to Vypin, Mattancherry, Willingdon Island, Bolgatty, Vyttila and Kakkanad. A weekly pass costs approximately ₹180 and a monthly one ₹600, which pays off from the third day of boat travel. Tickets are sold at the terminals and in the Kochi One app, and the Kochi1 card works on the metro, the Water Metro and feeder buses.
The state SWTD ferries are the old boats: Ernakulam to Fort Kochi in about 20 minutes for approximately ₹6, from around 6:00 to 21:10, and Fort Kochi to Vypin every ten minutes. Same water, open sides, wind in your face.

The metro
The Kochi Metro Blue Line is one line of 25 stations from Aluva in the north to Tripunithura in the south-east, with fares of approximately ₹10–60. It is useful for Edappally (Lulu Mall and the Kerala Museum), MG Road and Maharaja's College in the centre, Vyttila Hub, where long-distance buses, the metro and the Water Metro meet, and Tripunithura for Hill Palace. Details on the metro page.
Monsoon and late evenings
In the June–September monsoon heavy rain interrupts the ferries and the Water Metro, so keep a land route in reserve. In any season, the last boats leave around 20:00 (Water Metro) and 21:10 (SWTD): after dinner in Fort Kochi, the way back to Ernakulam is by road.
