Boat rides in Kochi

← Kochi

Kochi is a harbour city, and the best boat ride is often the cheapest: a state ferry for about ₹6 or a Water Metro trip for about ₹20–40 across to Fort Kochi and Vypin. For more time on the water, cruises and speed boats leave from Marine Drive in the evening, and the backwater villages of Kadamakkudy and Kumbalangi are 12–15 km out. Here are the options, a do-it-yourself harbour loop and what to know about season and safety.

Riding the Water Metro out to the islands

Battery-electric ferries run on a timetable across the harbour to Vypin, Bolgatty, Fort Kochi and Mattancherry and up the backwaters to South Chittoor and Eloor, showing Kochi from the water for ₹20–40 a trip.

Ways to get on the water

From a ₹6 ferry to a dinner cruise. Fares are approximate.

Water Metro: the easiest harbour ride (~₹20–40)

Air-conditioned electric boats from about 7 am to 8 pm, every 15 minutes at peak. High Court jetty to Fort Kochi takes about 20 minutes for about ₹40; other routes run to Vypin, Mattancherry, Willingdon Island, Kakkanad, and up the backwaters to South Chittoor (calling at Bolgatty) and Eloor. Buy at the terminal or in the Kochi One app; a week's pass is about ₹180.

State ferry: the same water for ~₹6

The old SWTD boats cross from Ernakulam to Fort Kochi in about 20 minutes, from around 6 am to 9 pm, and shuttle between Fort Kochi and Vypin every ten minutes. No air conditioning, wind in your face, and the cheapest view of the harbour.

Marine Drive cruises and speed boats

From the Marine Drive promenade in Ernakulam, operators run speed boats, motor boats, houseboats and dinner cruises on the lake, busiest in the evening and at night. Some go on to Bolgatty, the shipyard and Mattancherry. Prices vary by operator; compare at the jetty or book through an accredited operator.

Country boats at Kadamakkudy

Fourteen backwater islands about 15 km out of the city, with pokkali paddy, channels and fishermen casting nets at sunrise. A country-boat ride through the channels is the slow way to see them; October to April is the best window. Kadamakkudy

Mangrove canoes at Kumbalangi

On this island village south of Fort Kochi, canoe rides through the mangrove channels are part of a village day: fishing with a Chinese net and a cast net, coir-making and a fish lunch. Operators start at about ₹1,500 per person for a half day with lunch, about ₹2,000 for a full day.

A harbour loop on public boats

Half a day on the water for under ₹100, without booking anything.

  1. Start at High Court jetty in Ernakulam

Take the Water Metro to Fort Kochi (about 20 minutes, about ₹40).

  2. Walk to the Chinese nets

The nets stand along the waterfront by Vasco da Gama Square; they are worked in the morning and early evening, with the tide. Chinese fishing nets

  3. Cross to Vypin on the state ferry

The SWTD ferry from Fort Kochi to Vypin runs every ten minutes. Puthuvype Lighthouse and its beach are about ten minutes from the Vypin side.

  4. Return across the harbour

Back to Fort Kochi, then the state ferry or the Water Metro to Ernakulam. Leave a margin: the Water Metro stops at about 8 pm, the state ferries at about 9 pm.

Snake-boat racing: the Nehru Trophy

Kerala's best-known snake-boat race, the Nehru Trophy, is usually held in August on Punnamada Lake at Alappuzha, about 60 km south of Kochi. From Kochi it is a long day out: be in Alappuzha and seated by 11:00, since the town's roads close to traffic from the morning and the boats to the pavilions stop around noon; the final of the chundan (snake boats) comes in the late afternoon. Pavilion tickets are sold on the official site, nehrutrophy.nic.in, and the open banks along the course are free but crowded. Ernakulam, near the Junction station or the KSRTC bus stand, is the practical base for trains and buses to Alappuzha.

Season and safety

From June to September heavy rain can interrupt the ferries and the Water Metro, so keep a land route in reserve. For cruises and speed boats, Kerala Tourism recommends choosing an accredited operator. The Water Metro was designed for level boarding from floating pontoons, but confirm which terminals are step-free before planning a route.
