Kochi Metro and the Water Metro
Kochi has two metros, and a visitor usually needs both. The Kochi Metro is a single line of 25 stations from Aluva to Thrippunithura, running through mainland Ernakulam from about 6:00 to 23:00 for roughly ₹10–60 a trip. It never reaches Fort Kochi: the old town is across the harbour, and the Water Metro's electric boats cover that part for about ₹20–40. One Kochi1 card works on both.
Water Metro
Air-conditioned electric catamarans, 7:00 to 20:00, every 15 minutes at peak. High Court to Fort Kochi takes about 20 minutes for ₹40; other routes run to Vypin, Mattancherry and Kakkanad. Transfers to the metro at Vyttila and High Court.
~₹20–40
Kochi Metro: the Blue Line
One line of 25 stations from Aluva to Tripunithura; Phase I is finished and running. It works the mainland; Fort Kochi is reached over the water, not by rail.
~₹10–60
The line and its stations, north to south
Aluva, Pulinchodu, Companypady, Ambattukavu, Muttom, Kalamassery, Cochin University, Pathadipalam, Edapally, Changampuzha Park, Palarivattom, JLN Stadium, Kaloor, Town Hall, M.G. The stops that matter most on a trip:
- Aluva: the northern end and the link to the airport, about 15 km away by feeder bus.
- Edapally: Lulu Mall, with the Paragon restaurant inside it.
- M.G. Road and Maharaja's College: central Ernakulam, Marine Drive and Durbar Hall.
- Vyttila: the Vyttila Hub, where long-distance buses, the metro and the Water Metro meet.
- SN Junction and Thrippunithura: the southern end, for Tripunithura's Hill Palace and the Onam procession.
Timings and frequency
Approximate, from Kochi Metro's published timetable for the whole line, in both directions; KMRL revises it from time to time.
| Monday to Saturday | About 6:00–23:00; a train about every 7 minutes at the morning and evening peaks, every 8½ minutes otherwise |
| Sunday | About 7:30–23:00; a train about every 9 minutes |
| Public holidays | About 6:00–23:00; about every 10 minutes between 8:00 and 20:00, every 11 minutes outside those hours |
Fares and tickets
By KMRL's fare chart, fares go by distance in six steps of approximately ₹10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60. Aluva to M.G. Road is about ₹50, and the whole line, Aluva to Thrippunithura, about ₹60.
A single ticket is valid for 120 minutes from entry; overstaying costs ₹10 an hour, up to ₹50. Up to three children no taller than 90 cm ride free with an adult.
The Kochi1 card is worth it for more than a couple of rides: it takes 20% off every metro fare, is issued at any metro station and works on the Water Metro and the feeder buses too. On the card, a Weekday Pass costs about ₹125 and a Weekend Pass about ₹230. Tickets can also be bought through the Kochi One app.
The Water Metro: the metro for Fort Kochi
Kochi Metro Rail also runs the Water Metro, India's first, which opened in April 2023: air-conditioned battery-electric catamarans from about 7:00 to 20:00, every 15 minutes at peak. High Court to Fort Kochi takes about 20 minutes for about ₹40; other boats run to Vypin, Mattancherry, Willingdon Island, Kakkanad, South Chittoor and Eloor, with ten terminals open. Vyttila is where the Water Metro and the rail line meet.
If you ride the boats every day, a week costs about ₹180 and a month about ₹600. The old state ferries cross the same harbour from Ernakulam to Fort Kochi for about ₹6, without air conditioning and until about 21:10.
In the June–September monsoon, heavy rain interrupts the boats, so keep a road route in reserve. More ways around the city: getting around Kochi.
From the airport by metro
The metro does not reach Cochin International Airport. The budget route is KMRL's air-conditioned Metro Connect feeder bus, non-stop for about 15 km from the airport to Aluva station for about ₹80, then the Blue Line into the city: roughly ₹100–150 for the whole way, with no traffic jams on the second half. Other options are in how to get to Kochi.
