How to reach Kochi

← Kochi

Most people reach Kochi by air, at Cochin International (COK) in Nedumbassery, which the Ernakulam district administration puts about 27 km north of Kochi; Fort Kochi, across the harbour, is roughly 40 km away by road. Trains arrive at the two Ernakulam stations and long-distance buses at Kaloor and the Vyttila Hub. The decision that matters more than the mode is which half of the city you are going to: Ernakulam is the mainland, while Fort Kochi and Mattancherry sit across the harbour, and the quickest way there is usually a boat.

Cochin International (COK), Nedumbassery

Kerala's main gateway, with direct flights from the Gulf and all of southern India. It is about 30 km to Ernakulam and 37–40 to Fort Kochi, an hour to an hour and a half on the road.

Best option

By train

Two stations, both called Ernakulam: Junction (South) is the busier one and closer to the centre, Town (North) takes part of the long-distance traffic. The name on the ticket matters.

Long-distance buses

KSRTC comes in from Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and Bengaluru; private sleepers use Kaloor and the Vyttila Hub, which is also where the metro and the Water Metro meet.

In the June–September monsoon heavy rain interrupts the ferries and the Water Metro, so keep a land route in reserve.

By air: Cochin International and the transfer

COK is Kerala's main gateway, with direct flights from the Gulf and across southern India; the Ernakulam district administration also lists Singapore among its international links. From other countries the usual route is a connection through a Gulf hub or a large Indian airport. In 2015 it became the first airport in the world to run entirely on solar power.

Three ways into the city:

  • Prepaid taxi: the CIAL counter works around the clock and charges by zone, so the price is fixed before you leave the building: about ₹900–1,100 to Fort Kochi, 1–1.5 hours. Uber and Ola also pick up at the airport and outside rush hours come out ₹200–500 cheaper.
  • Bus and metro: about 15 km by bus to Aluva station, then the metro's Blue Line into the city. Around ₹100 for the whole way and 1.5–2 hours, and the second half is immune to traffic.
  • Arriving late: the boats to Fort Kochi stop in the evening (see below), so after a night landing a taxi straight through is the practical answer.

By train: two stations called Ernakulam

Kochi has two main stations and both carry the Ernakulam name: Ernakulam Junction (South, code ERS), the busier one and closer to the centre, and Ernakulam Town (North, ERN), which takes part of the long-distance traffic. Read the station on the ticket carefully, especially when someone is meeting you.

  • From Bengaluru: the Vande Bharat (chair car only, to Ernakulam Junction) runs six days a week, not on Wednesdays, in about 8 hours 40 minutes, for roughly ₹1,400–1,500. The Island Express and other night trains take 10–12 hours, from about ₹400 in sleeper class.
  • From Thiruvananthapuram: frequent expresses, Vande Bharat among them, in about 3.5–4.5 hours.

From either station to Fort Kochi, the boat is usually faster than the road. More on Ernakulam's railway stations.

By bus

State KSRTC buses come in from Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and Bengaluru. Private sleeper coaches stop at Kaloor and at the Vyttila Hub, where the metro and the Water Metro meet, which makes Vyttila the easier place to get off with luggage. From Bengaluru the night sleepers, state and private, take about 10–12 hours, roughly the same as the night train.

The last leg: across the water to Fort Kochi

By road, Fort Kochi is a long way round through the bridges and Ernakulam's traffic. Two boats cross the same harbour:

  1. Water Metro from High Court

Air-conditioned electric catamarans, about 20 minutes and ₹40 from the High Court terminal to Fort Kochi, roughly 7:00–20:00 and every 15 minutes at peak. The Vyttila and High Court terminals connect with the metro.

  2. The state ferry from Ernakulam

The old SWTD boats cross from Ernakulam to Fort Kochi in about 20 minutes for around ₹6, from about 6:00 until about 21:10, with the wind instead of air conditioning.

  3. After the last boat

A cab through an app (Uber and Ola work normally) or an auto-rickshaw for the short hops; agree the price with rickshaw drivers before you start. More on getting around Kochi.

In the monsoon

From June to September heavy rain interrupts the ferries and the Water Metro. If you arrive in those months, keep a road option for the trip to Fort Kochi.
